The CW Shake-Up: 7 Shows Canceled, 3 New Dramas Added to 2022-2023 Broadcast Schedule

It’s out with the old and in with the new at The CW. After canceling seven of its shows, the network has ordered three brand new series to freshen up its lineup. Gotham Knights, Walker: Independence and The Winchesters have all been greenlit by The CW, shortly after Charmed; Dynasty; Roswell, New Mexico; The 4400, In the Dark and Naomi were all axed, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In addition, Legacies was canceled later on in the evening, bringing The Vampire Diaries franchise to a close after 13 years.

Gotham Knights, a one-hour drama joining the network’s 2022-23 broadcast season, takes place after the murder of Bruce Wayne, although The CW notes it is not a Batwoman spinoff. The upcoming series follows Bruce’s “rebellious adopted son,” played by Oscar Morgan, who “forges an unlikely alliance with the children of Batman’s enemies when they are all framed for killing the Caped Crusader.” When Gotham “descends into the most dangerous it’s ever been,” Oscar and his “team of mismatched fugitives” have to protect the city in Batman’s absence.

Another CW addition, Walker: Independence, is also an hour-long drama, but it takes place far from the city and back in time. Set in the 1800s, the show tells the story of Abby Walker (Katherine McNamara), who seeks revenge after the murder of her husband and connect with Hoyt Rawlins (Matt Barr) along the way. While traveling together, the duo struggles “with the changing world around them, while becoming agents of change themselves in a town where nothing is what it seems,” per the show’s logline.

The Winchesters, the third series to join The CW lineup, is — you guessed it — an hour-long drama. Supernatural fans will be thrilled to learn of the prequel series, which follows Sam and Dean’s predecessors, parents John and Mary. The CW describes The Winchesters as an “epic, untold love story of how John (Drake Rodger) met Mary (Meg Donnelly) and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world.”

The CW is bringing back some favorites along with its exciting new additions. The network has renewed All American: Homecoming, All American, The Flash, Kung Fu, Nancy Drew, Riverdale, Superman & Louis and Walker.

Both Charmed and Roswell, New Mexico are coming to an end on The CW after four seasons each. Into the Dark has not been renewed for a fifth season, while The 4400 and Naomi have each been canceled after one season on the network. Dynasty, which had the longest run of the recently canceled shows, has met its end after five seasons.

Still TBD are the fates of shows Tom Swift and DC’s Stargirl, as both the upcoming network Upfronts loom next week, as well as a potential sale of the network.

This story has been updated to reflect the cancellation of Legacies.
