What would you do to save your own life? Would you inject yourself with volatile bat DNA? Would you clone yourself? The protagonists in this week’s new movies on VOD seem like they’ll go to any lengths, and take whatever risks necessary, to save themselves, until things go horribly wrong.
In Morbius, Jared Leto stars as the Marvel character who’s half-doctor, half-vampire (a real catch, according to someone’s Jewish goth grandma) who tries to cure his own blood disease but ends up creating a potion that creates vampires. Meanwhile in Dual, Karen Gillan plays a woman who clones herself, and then learns that since there can only be one of her, it’s kill or be killed.
The news of Bruce Willis‘s retirement earlier this spring came as a bit of a shock to many people, but the actor banked quite a few films that have yet to be released, including Vendetta, which just came out. In the film, which also stars Mike Tyson and Thomas Jane, focuses on a man named William Duncan (Clive Standen) who seeks revenge after his daughter is killed during a gang initiation. He gets sucked in a little too deep when he kills a gang member and now has to face that gang member’s father, played by Willis, in a violent game of and eye for an eye…for another eye, and then another.

Karen Gillan is perfecting the art of playing two of the same character in one film. In Avengers: Endgame, she played Thanos’s cyborg daughter Nebula in two different timelines in an effort to kill her father and reverse The Blip, and now in Dual, she’s playing two versions of a woman named Sarah. When the first, real Sarah, was diagnosed with a terminal illness, she decided to clone herself for the benefit of her loved ones. Miraculously, the real Sarah recovered, and now the only way to restore the integrity of her existence is to battle her clone to the death in a duel. So now Real Sarah has to train for a fight to save her own life. Dual Sarahs dueling it out, get it?
Morbius
Dr. Michael Morbius (played by Jared Leto) is Marvel’s answer to Batman, but instead of having a sad, orphan back story like Bruce Wayne, Morbius’s back story is that he’s afflicted with a rare blood disease for which he’s spent his life searching for the cure. When he injects himself with some bat DNA to see if that, uh, helps, things go awry, he turns into a vampire who thirsts for blood. Complicating things is his brother Milo (Matt Smith), who is afflicted with the same blood disease, and gets his hands on that sweet bat DNA for himself, only to become a bloodthirsty vamp himself.
