‘Better Call Saul’: 5 Questions That Must Be Answered in the Final Episodes

There are only six episodes left in Better Call Saul‘s final season, and things have never been more tense. Unlike previous seasons, the final installment of Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould’s legal thriller has been divided into two parts, a decision that was made halfway through production. And honestly? They couldn’t have come up with a better midseason cliffhanger if they had tried. Spoilers ahead.

“Plan and Execution” saw Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) and Kim (Rhea Seehorn) complete their scheme against Howard (Patrick Fabian). But the episode wasn’t defined by expensive tequila and celebratory sex. Instead, it ended with the return of Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton) in their lives. As far as unwelcome surprises go, that may be one of the worst ones of all time. With only half a season remaining, we have questions for Better Call Saul’s ultimate finale. We also have one plea: Please spare Kim Wexler.

1

What is Lalo going to do to Jimmy and Kim?

“Plan and Execution” ended with Jimmy and Kim’s worst fears coming true. With all of the Chicken Man’s men watching over Gus (Giancarlo Esposito), no one was left to look after our favorite lawyers. And that meant Lalo had them all to himself.

We already know that Lalo has a bone to pick with Jimmy and by extension Kim. Though Jimmy freed him from police custody, he also worked with Mike (Jonathan Banks) to bring Lalo down. From Jimmy’s perspective, it was really help Mike or die, but Lalo has never been a sympathetic person. Is Lalo planning on killing Jimmy and Kim? Will he kill just Kim as a warning? Or does he realize that these two are more beneficial alive rather than dead? No matter what he decides, our antiheroes are in trouble.

What will happen after Howard's death?

Speaking of Lalo, let’s talk about his most recent kill: Howard Hamlin. After a minor snag, Jimmy and Kim’s scheme against Howard went off perfectly. They were able to force an early Sandpiper settlement, which means a ton of cash for them in the near future. Howard managed to figure out their elaborate plan, but he was too late. Episode 7 ended with Howard going to Jimmy’s apartment to confront him only to be shot in the head by Lalo.

Howard’s death brings up a ton of questions. What’s going to happen to his body? Are Jimmy and Kim going to have to deal with it? And what about the crime scene? Howard isn’t like Fred, the TravelWire agent Lalo killed. Howard was a wealthy and well-connected family man whose death will almost certainly cause a stir in the legal community. Even if they cover their tracks perfectly, any investigation into his murder will lead the cops to Jimmy. After all, the day before Howard died, he was ranting about Jimmy to a roomful of people. And if the cops go to Jimmy, it’s only a matter of time before they start looking more closely into his cartel connections. As horrifying as Howard’s death is, it’s the aftermath that may be even scarier.

When will Mike figure out what Lalo did?

The only reason why Lalo was able to confront Jimmy and Kim was because he tricked Mike. After realizing that his uncle Hector’s (Mark Margolis) phone was bugged, Lalo lied to Hector, telling him that he was planning on targeting Gus that night. Of course, that was a lie. Really, Lalo wanted to confront the married couple without any of Gus’ men around.

We know that Mike is going to realize he’s been played. He’s simply too good to not see through this. But when will it happen? What will he do when he finds out? And most importantly, what will Gus do in retaliation? We know that Jimmy can trust Mike; almost dying in the desert is a bond you can’t break. But can Jimmy trust Gus to not leave him for dead?

What happens to Lalo Salamanca?

When it was revealed at the end of Season 5 that Lalo was still alive, it was a relief. As manically chaotic as he is, Lalo has added some real pep to this show. But we know that Lalo isn’t a major character in Breaking Bad.

Lalo Salamanca is mentioned once in Vince Gilligan’s original series. After Jesse (Aaron Paul) and Walter (Bryan Cranston) kidnap Jimmy/Saul in Season 2’s “Better Call Saul”, he screams “It wasn’t me, it was Ignacio. He’s the one!” It’s only after they confirm that Lalo didn’t send them that Jimmy/Saul calms down.

Because of that line of dialogue, it seems as though Lalo is still alive from June of 2004 to December of 2008. So why don’t we see him? Is Lalo only stationed in Mexico, likely due to his many murders in the U.S.? Is he somewhere else in the world? Or did he die without Jimmy knowing? Whatever the reason, the fact that Lalo never appears in Breaking Bad is suspect.

Does Kim Wexler survive?

This is the question that has haunted Better Call Saul from Episode 1. At this point in Jimmy and Kim’s relationship, they are joined at the hip. They’re married, have accepted cartel money together, and have launched too many joint schemes to count. So why isn’t Kim in Breaking Bad?

The most obvious answer is that she doesn’t make it out of this saga alive. Why else would she suddenly separate from Jimmy? Even if she did want to leave him — which she doesn’t — the threat of the cartel would keep her by his side. We’re praying we’re wrong about this one. Kim is too marvelous to deserve a shallow grave in the New Mexico desert.
