‘The View’: Whoopi Goldberg Suggests We Apply “Abortion Laws to Guns” After Texas Mass Shooting

Whoopi Goldberg slammed republicans for their hypocrisy in an emotional speech on this morning’s episode of The View. The co-host ripped politicians like Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for proposing restrictive abortion laws but refusing to pass gun reform in the wake of yesterday’s tragic mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, which left 19 students and two teachers dead.

While discussing the Tuesday shooting, Goldberg called out Abbott for “making it easier for mass shooters to buy, carry and own guns in his state,” before suggesting we “apply his abortion laws to guns by deputizing citizens to sue anyone involved in gun violence.”

Texas banned most abortions in 2021 under Senate Bill 8, which makes the procedure illegal if a fetal heartbeat is detected. The bill also gives citizens the right to sue a health care provider for performing an abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy.

Goldberg proposed that if guns were treated with the same logic as abortion in Texas, private citizens could sue people who sold an AR-15 at a gun show or “call the cops” on anyone with “too big an arsenal” of guns. Digging deeper into her abortion comparison, Goldberg said, “let’s invoke some Supreme Court logic, too. Alito says abortion is not in the constitution? Well neither are AR-15s, so I guess the constitution doesn’t cover them, either.”

As she continued, “Life is so sacred? Then stop using guns to abort young lives,” co-host Joy Behar cut in to urge viewers, “Stop voting for republicans,” but Goldberg disagreed, replying, “No, don’t stop voting for republicans. But get better republicans in there.”

Goldberg also said she believes people can still own a gun, “but you can’t have your AR-15.” She continued, “If you’re gonna get all in my business and tell me what my family can and cannot do, neither can you. They’re gonna come for those AR-15s, and you better get ready to give them up. Because this is America. We were supposed to be able to do things and be the people we wanted to be, and now we are in a crazy place.”

Lamenting the lack of action since the Sandy Hook shooting 10 years ago, Goldberg said, “We are allowing things out there that kill children, and you didn’t do anything the last time. You’ve done nothing since Sandy Hook. I think it’s time for the people to say, ‘We’re gonna take this to the courts and we’re gonna make you give these guns up, because you don’t need to have them.'”
