Kevin Costner Shares ‘Field of Dreams’ Moment Remembering Ray Liotta: “Now God Has Ray”

Kevin Costner is remembering his late co-star, Ray Liotta, with a heartfelt tribute about their time working together on the 1989 sports drama Field of Dreams. Costner, who starred in the film as a farmer whose field is home to the ghosts of famous past players, looked back on Liotta’s role in the movie as Shoeless Joe Jackson.

Costner honored Liotta’s memory with a clip from Field of Dreams, which he shared to Twitter Thursday shortly after the news of Liotta’s death broke. The actor died in his sleep at age 67 Thursday in the Dominican Republic, where he had been filming the movie Dangerous Waters.

“Devastated to hear the news of Ray Liotta’s passing,” Costner wrote on Twitter. “While he leaves an incredible legacy, he’ll always be ‘Shoeless Joe Jackson’ in my heart. What happened that moment in the film was real. God gave us that stunt. Now God has Ray.”

In the clip, Costner and Liotta practice at night in the field, with Costner quietly telling himself, “I am pitching to Shoeless Joe Jackson,” before tossing him a curveball, which nearly knocks him out when Liotta sends it hurtling back to him.

As Costner laughs while he falls to the pitcher’s mound, Liotta does not return his smile, and on his next hit, he knocks the ball out into the field, sending it flying far over both their heads. “Man, I did love this game,” Liotta says.

Field of Dreams was just one of Liotta’s memorable film roles. The actor was also widely known for his starring turn in Goodfellas, as well as The Rat Pack, Smokin’ Aces, Unlawful Entry, Cop Land, Narc and Something Wild.  In more recent years, he also starred in the Netflix drama Marriage Story and The Sopranos prequel movie The Many Saints of Newark.

Costner joined the scores of other actors and industry professionals who mourned Liotta’s loss on social media yesterday. Lorraine Bracco, James Caan, Jamie Lee Curtis and more also shared their grief at his passing yesterday with their own touching tributes.
