‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 Breaks Viewing Records at Netflix

Stranger Things has made a roaring return to Netflix. The sci-fi series shattered records at the streamer with its fourth season, marking the biggest premiere weekend ever for an English language series, and ousting previous record holder Bridgerton, Netflix announced Tuesday.

By pulling in 286.79 million hours during its first weekend on Netflix, Stranger Things Season 4 beat out Bridgerton‘s 193 million hour premiere weekend for its second season, which debuted in March. Stranger Things Season 4, volume 1 premiered on Netflix May 27.

The new season of Stranger Things also sparked a renewed interest in past seasons of the Duffer Brothers series. Per Netflix data,  all past seasons landed in the streamer’s Top 10; Season 1 saw 38.05 million hours viewed, while Season 2 saw 22.21 million and Season 3  pulled in 24.29 million.

Although Stranger Things boasts some pretty impressive premiere numbers, it couldn’t beat the cultural phenomenon that is Squid Game. The Korean series pulled in millions more viewing hours than Stranger Things in its first few weeks on Netflix. Per the streamer’s self-reported stats, Squid Game saw the most viewing hours in week 3, when it pulled in 571.76 million, and week 2, when it reported 448.73 million hours. Squid Game, a drama that premiered on Netflix in September 2021, was a massive hit for Netflix and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Drama.

While Stranger Things caused a frenzy on Netflix with its latest episodes, there’s still more to come from the Upside Down. Seven episodes that make up Stranger Things Season 4, volume 1 have dropped, but we’re still awaiting Season 4, volume 2, which includes two episodes and will premiere July 1. Stranger Things will end with Season 5.

The latest episodes of Stranger Things come three years after Season 3 dropped on Netflix and six years after the show first premiered in 2016. Stranger Things, which follows a group of young friends in 1980s Indiana, stars Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Winona Ryder and David Harbour.

Stranger Things Seasons 1 through 4 are now streaming on Netflix.
