Ariana DeBose Makes Tony Awards Memorable Performing from Andrew Garfield’s Lap

Ariana DeBose got flirty with Andrew Garfield during Sunday’s Tony Awards telecast, cozying right up to the Under the Banner of Heaven star and serenading him. DeBose, who hosted yesterday’s event, left the stage to sing to Garfield, who laughed his way through the now-viral moment.

“I am close to you / Oh so close to you,” DeBose belted out as she approached Garfield in his seat. She continued, “I am touching you / there’s not a lot you can do,” while draping one arm over the back of his chair and poking his face with her finger.

DeBose wasn’t done yet, though, and plopped right down on Garfield’s lap as she sang, “I am sitting on you / ‘Cause what they say is true / ‘Cause there is no escaping us in the audience!”

Garfield literally embraced his bit in DeBose’s performance, hugging the West Side Story actor as she leaned back and touched her forehead to his.

DeBose hosted Sunday’s awards show for the first time, where A Strange Loop took home Best Musical and Six took home Best Original Score. DeBose herself has not been nominated for a Tony just yet, but she was nominate for and won and Oscar at this year’s ceremony, securing Best Supporting Actress. 2022 has been a packed year for the star after she wowed audiences in West Side Story – DeBose has also appeared in Netflix’s Human Resources and is set to star in the latest season of Westworld, which premieres on HBO on June 26.

Garfield was not nominated for a Tony at Sunday’s ceremony, but proved his musical prowess while playing Jonathan Larson in last year’s Netflix musical, tick, tick… BOOM!. Since then, he has appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home and starred in the FX true crime series Under the Banner of Heaven.
