‘Squid Game’ Renewed By Netflix For Season 2: Here’s Who’s Coming Back

Squid Game is officially coming back! Netflix announced via Twitter on Sunday (June 12) that they have greenlit a second season of their most popular series. Director and producer Hwang Dong-Hyuk also released a letter to fans, sharing a glimpse of what expect for the next installment of the show.

“It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever,” reads the statement. “As the writer, director, and producer of Squid Game, a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show.”

Though the release was light on details, Hwang’s statement continues by teasing a bit of the story for the follow-up season, sharing that the masked antagonist, the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), and Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-Jae) will both return.

“The man in the suit with ddakji might be back,” Dong-Hyuk added, referring to the strange salesman who recruits desperate players to the game show.

But, there was a kicker. The most exciting tease comes at the end, mentioning that viewers will be introduced to Cheol-su, the “boyfriend” of the show’s infamous animatronic doll, Young-hee.

Executive producer Kim Ji-Yeon told Tudum there’s been “a lot of pressure” to make season 2 even better. “We are working on the script right now and making the form of the story,” Ji-Yeon said. “I know that a lot of the different fans and audiences have enjoyed the series very much, but really we’re focusing on how to make it even more joyful to the global audience.”

Dong-hyuk told Vanity Fair that season 2 of the series — which follows a group of poor citizens into a high-stakes competition of deadly children’s games run by a mysterious organization — could be released as early 2023 or 2024. “Humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again,” he said.

From the sound of it, Season 2 may be just the beginning for the series. Towards the end of last year, Dong-hyuk revealed to KBS in Korea that the popular streamer was already discussing a third season. Knowing how well the first season did, Netflix will keep this K-drama series in rotation for years to come.
