Will There Be an ‘Umbrella Academy’ Season 4 on Netflix?

Great news: you’ve finished The Umbrella Academy Season 3 on Netflix. You did it! Your intense binge-watching session is over. And now, you’re probably wondering when you can move on and watch The Umbrella Academy Season 4, particularly after that wild ending.

But will there be an Umbrella Academy Season 4 on Netflix? When could it premiere, if so? And what could possibly happen in the fourth season… Is there any material from the comics by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá to draw on? Here’s everything we know about The Umbrella Academy Season 4, so four. I mean, far.

Will There Be An Umbrella Academy Season 4 On Netflix?

As of right now? we have no idea. Still, there are a few promising signs that would indicate there will be a Season 4 of The Umbrella Academy. The first, and this might seem a little counter-intuitive for how shows get canceled, but Netflix did not announce Season 3 of Umbrella Academy as the final season. Though the streamer has canceled plenty of shows, particularly for their more genre friendly and popular series, they tend to announce something as the “third and final season;” for example, Locke & Key. That gives creators time to wrap up their stories, and fans time to properly mourn.

Second sign, and very mild spoilers here, the third season ends on a game-changing cliffhanger. That’s either a sign of confidence from showrunner Steve Blackman, or a last-ditch effort to convince Netflix they have to pick up a Season 4 to find out what happens or risk some very angry fans. I tend to think the former, in this case.

The third sign that it will probably get picked up is that the first two seasons were heavily streamed according to Netflix’s self-reported stats, and well received by critics. If Season 3 holds steady to Netflix’s internal stats from Seasons 1 and 2, there’s no real reason to think the show wouldn’t continue. That said, we’ll have to wait and see on that info… Umbrella Academy was picked up for Season 2 about two months after Season 1 debuted, while there was a gap of about four months between the release of Season 2 and the Season 3 renewal. Point being, it may take a little while to find out the status of Umbrella Academy Season 4.

When Will The Umbrella Academy Season 4 Premiere on Netflix?

Let’s say Umbrella Academy does get picked up for Season 4 by Netflix. If so, when could it premiere? Great question. Here’s the answer. Based on the first three seasons, it takes about 5-6 months to film a season of Umbrella Academy. However, post-production has varied wildly, most likely because of COVID-19. New seasons of the show have been released anywhere from seven months to 10 months after production has concluded. COVID has also caused a wide gap in when seasons premiered, with the first two seasons having a gap of about a year and a half, while Seasons 2 and 3 debuted almost two years apart.

Based on all that, and production returning to a relative new normal, it’s possible a new season of The Umbrella Academy could debut about a year and a half from now, i.e. November or December of 2023. If it takes on the longer end to pick up the show, though, it could return early 2024, instead. Hang in there, my brellies.

What Could Happen In The Umbrella Academy Season 4?

If you’ve watched The Umbrella Academy Season 3, and spoilers past this point, you know that our heroes are no longer superpowered, and are trapped in a new reality where Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) reigns supreme. If there is a fourth season, chances are they’ll have to get powers back before too long, and figure out just what it is their former father is up to. Oh, and there’s that second Ben (Justin H. Min) out there to think about, as well as plenty of other potential doubles. Time for a twin battle?
