‘The Boys’ Did Not Ask Gal Gadot To Join Their “Imagine” Video

Prime Video’s The Boys is as much celebrity and cultural satire as it is a superhero show, and Season 3 is no different. From our obsessions with pop culture, to men’s rights activists, to reality TV shows, nothing is sacred. So naturally — and spoilers past this point — this week’s episode, “Herogasm”, kicked off with a savage riff on Gal Gadot’s “Imagine” video… Minus Gal Gadot, of course.

The set-up is that after getting woken up from a decades-long hibernation by The Boys, Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), the show’s take on Captain America, seems to have developed a new power: exploding. Or rather, after returning to society in the previous episode, he freaked out and blew up nearly a full city block. Naturally, the superheroes and celebrities of the world of The Boys did the only thing they could, and that was tape a YouTube video singing “Imagine”.

This is, in case you can’t remember back that far, the exact same thing Gal Gadot and friends did at the beginning of the pandemic, using their considerable wealth and influence to ease the woes of a deadly virus by crooning a little off-tune John Lennon, something that was roundly criticized.

The Boys take on it kicks off with The Deep (Chace Crawford) talking about how everyone is having a hard time right now, while ads for his book flash in the corner. As he starts to sing, he’s joined by a bevy of celebs including Patton Oswalt, Josh Gad, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis (who should have known better after their Cheetos commercial), a pitch-perfect Elizabeth Banks, Kumail Nanjiani, Rose Byrne, and the kicker is the silent Black Noir of superteam The Seven.

But noticeably absent from the video? Gal Gadot. When asked about whether they reached out to her for the slot, showrunner Eric Kripke laughed. “No. No. That would be mean. It was more about a superhero created a really unfortunate public celebrity moment and so how could we not use that? We went out to all of our friends, and who was willing to videotape themselves or film themselves with their phone singing ‘Imagine’ and ended up with a pretty funny roster of people.”

So there you go! Maybe if Gal Gadot wants to fire back at the show, she could record her take on “Octopus’s Garden”. The Deep would certainly like that.

The Boys streams Fridays on Prime Video.
