Based on the novel by Jennifer E. Smith, this YA romance is a little different than your typical boy-meets-girl fare. While it’s true that boy does meet girl, it’s also true that girl tells boy she doesn’t want to go to college with a boyfriend immediately after they meet. So Aidan (played by Jordan Fisher) and Clare (played by Talia Ryder) decide to make a pact: They will date for exactly one year—their senior year of high school—with the knowledge that they will break up before they both leave for college. And when they do break up, they’ll say goodbye with one last epic date.

As you watch Aidan and Clare embark on their final date, it’s obvious that they love each other very much. Their friends and family think they are crazy—why would they end something that is so clearly good? Clare is off to Dartmouth, and Aidan is off to medical school, but do they really have to break up? If you want to find out what happens, read on for the Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between ending explained.

Fair warning: Expect Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between spoilers from here forward.

How does Hello, Goodbye, and Everything In Between end? Hello, Goodbye, and Everything In Between ending, explained:

The short answer is that Clare and Aidan do break up… but they might get back together.

Over the course of the romantic day that Aidan planned for Clare, it becomes clear that Aidan is hoping to convince Clare to stay together. But it’s also clear that Clare—who was traumatized by her parents’ messy divorce after they married young—is determined to stick to her plan and go off to college without any attachments.

Eventually, it comes out that Aidan gave in to pressure from his parents to go to med school, rather than pursuing a career in music, in part because he wants to go to school near Clare, in order to make long-distance work. Clare tells Aidan off for pressuring himself to be a perfect person, and for being afraid to fail. Aidan in turn calls out Clare for basically the same thing—she’s so afraid their relationship will fail, that she won’t even let it start.

After their fight, Clare asks for one last chance to say goodbye. She tells Aidan he was right, that she was scared, and that she loves him. They spend a romantic night together swimming, and Clare offers to stay together with Aidan—but Aidan tells Clare that she is right. “You’re always right, it’s really annoying,” he tells her. The next day, they say goodbye, but imply that this is not the last time they will see each other.

We montage through their first year apart. Aidan defers his medical school acceptance and goes to LA to make it as a musician. Clare goes to Dartmouth. But they text. When summer comes, Clare asks if she can meet up with Aidan. They say “Hello,” and the movie ends. We don’t know if Clare and Aidan will get back together or not, but the movie leaves things open that they might.

So does that mean there will be a Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between sequel? Probably not. Unlike the To All the Boys series, there is not a book sequel to Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between. But hey, you never know!
