HBO/HBO Max Trounces Deflated Netflix in 2022 Primetime Emmy Awards Nominations, Earning Nearly 40 More Noms

HBO is continuing its streak as the frontrunner of the streaming wars, nabbing more Primetime Emmy Award nominations than its rival, Netflix, which is already faltering due to a slow trickle of issues entirely non-Emmy related. HBO snagged a total of 140 Emmy nominations, while Netflix earned 105, dropping from its total of 129 last year.

HBO had the most nominations of any network or platform this year, with Succession pulling in 25 noms alone. The comedy-drama earned recognition in multiple categories, including Outstanding Drama Series and both Outstanding Lead Actor and Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Go, Jeremy Strong! You really are HBO’s number one boy.

The White Lotus, HBO’s breakout limited series from last summer, followed closely behind Succession with 20 nominations of its own, including nods for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Supporting Actress for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

Other series that helped boost HBO above Netflix were Hacks, Euphoria, Barry, Station Eleven, A Black Lady Sketch Show, George Carlin’s American Dream and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

HBO has plenty of reasons to pop the champagne today, but Netflix is likely a little less joyous. The streamer was nominated for 24 fewer Emmys than last year, and fell nearly 40 nominations behind HBO. Still, its awards recognition was nothing to scoff at. With attention for Stranger Things, Inventing Anna and Ozark, Netflix didn’t do too poorly today.

The wildly popular Squid Game earned Netflix 14 nominations, including Outstanding Lead Actor. And Netflix plans to squeeze every last drop of Squid Game mania out of the hit. Last month, the streamer made the unfortunate announcement that they have a reality series inspired by Squid Game in the works — which, they had to clarify in a release, will not include fight-to-the-death challenges. Fun!

While HBO and Netflix were busy duking it out, an unexpected winner snuck in to beat both the streamers with an even higher number of nominations. Disney earned 147 Emmy nominations in total, thanks to its platforms Disney+ and Hulu.

To see which streamer takes home the most Emmy Awards, we still have to wait a few months. The 2022 Emmy Awards will air at 8/7c on Sept. 12 on NBC.
