Ending Explained

‘Ms. Marvel’ End Credits Scene Teases ‘The Marvels’

From the moment Ms. Marvel started, we all knew how it would most likely end. That’s because even before the show debuted, it was known where Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) would pop up next: 2023’s feature film The Marvels. So if your show stars Captain Marvel’s #1 superfan and it’s already a known fact that said superfan is gonna team up with her hero in her hero’s sequel, of course you’re gonna close out with a teaser for that movie. Ms. Marvel threw fans a curveball by actually ending its finale with a completely different twist, but the post-credits scene was exactly what we wanted — albeit still not what we expected!

If that mid-credits teaser and A-lister cameo has you confused, keep reading. SPOILERS ahead!

Ms. Marvel after credits scene explained

At the halfway point of the credits, we open up again on the Khan family home in Jersey City. Kamala, in full Ms. Marvel gear, falls down on her bed in exhaustion. Her mom calls up to her from downstairs, saying, “Kamala, that does not sound like science homework to me!” Then all of a sudden Kamala’s bangle starts to pulsate with purple energy. Suddenly Kamala is yanked backwards by an unseen force and, after crashing through her closet door, Carol Danvers emerges. Ms. Marvel is gone and Captain Marvel is here.

Carol looks around and sees that she is in a terrifying place: a bedroom plastered with illustrations and posters and drawings of her.

Cap mutters to herself, “Oh no no no no no” and then runs out of frame, presumably to the next scene in The Marvels. Sidenote: It feels like this is probably a literal scene from The Marvels, doesn’t it?

So what… happened… in the Ms. Marvel end credits scene?

It’s incredibly likely that we just saw the first usage of the Nega-Bands. I explained this in the Easter eggs post for Episode 4, and this scene seems to confirm it. In the comics, the original Captain Marvel — a male Kree soldier named Mar-Vell — wore a pair of gold bands that when banged together allowed him to trade places with a human dude named Rick Jones.

This setup was also used in the 1999 Captain Marvel comic, which starred Mar-Vell’s “son” (it’s a long story) Genis-Vell swapping places with Rick. When Carol Danvers assumed the Captain Marvel mantle in 2012, the whole “bang those bands!” angle was dropped — and it now looks like Marvel Studios is gonna introduce this classic bit of Captain Marvel lore into the MCU in The Marvels.

If you want more proof, other than the whole Kamala-swapping-places-with-Carol thing, just look at what Captain Marvel is wearing on her wrists.

Those sure do look like a pair of gold bands to me. Also you can see her hands briefly pulsating with purple energy when she steps out of the closet.

Now, how these bands are connected to Kamala’s bangle remains to be seen. There was also mention of another bangle back in Ms. Marvel Episode 4, which we still haven’t seen. And there’s the fact that the bangle is of Djinn origin and Captain Marvel’s bands are presumably of Kree origin like in the comics (although honestly we don’t know anything about these bands). There are a lot of questions that need answers, and we’ll have to wait until summer 2023 to get them.

For now, though, Ms. Marvel’s mid-credits scene gives us our first glimpse of what The Marvels‘ plot is gonna be. It looks like Kamala and Carol are connected via these bands, and our Jersey City hero is gonna get the team-up she’s always wanted in a way she least expected.

The Marvels opens in theaters on July 28, 2023.
