Bruce Willis Celebrates ‘Die Hard’ Anniversary with Return to Nakatomi Plaza

Bruce Willis is ringing in the Die Hard anniversary with the return to one of the famous film’s most iconic locations. The actor marked 34 years since his hit action movie was released by posing for a clip filmed on top of Nakatomi Plaza — or, as it’s also known, the Fox Plaza building — posted to Instagram Sunday (July 17) by his wife, Emma Heming Willis.

In the short video, Willis leans on a railing on top of the building while looking out at the scene surrounding him. The clip also includes footage from the original Die Hard movie, which was released in 1988. Heming Willis captioned her post, “Nakatomi Plaza 34 years later #happymovieanniversary #diehard @20thcenturystudios.”

Willis’ return to Nakatomi Plaza comes after he vowed never to set foot in the building again as his Die Hard character, policeman John McClane, who delivers the line, “I promise I will never even think about going up in a tall building again,” after rescuing a group of hostages from the building.

The success of the first Die Hard film was so huge that it inspired multiple sequels, which Willis also starred in: 1990’s Die Hard 2, 1995’s Die Hard with a Vengeance, 2007’s Live Free or Die Hard and 2013’s A Good Day to Die Hard.

Willis’ Die Hard Instagram tribute comes after his family announced that he would be retiring from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia, a brain disorder that can affect communication skills and make it difficult to speak or understand others, per the Mayo Clinic.

“To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities,” his family shared in a message posted to Instagram in March. “As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.”

Willis’ retirement comes after a long, prolific career that included memorable roles not only in the Die Hard films, but also in The Sixth Sense, Armageddon and countless action movies.
