2022 has been sadly devoid of excellent horror movies. But one was brave enough to answer the call: The Black Phone, which hit big screens this past June, and is now available on VOD.
The Black Phone follows the story of 13 year old Finney Shaw (Mason Thames) as he’s being held captive by the cold-blooded masked killer, “The Grabber.” He soon stumbles upon a disconnected phone that mysteriously starts to ring and discovers that he can hear the voices: The Grabber’s former victims.
Creepy but intriguing, right? If you’re looking to watch something as good as The Black Phone, we’ve got some choices dialed up right here.
'Split'
Split is a one of a kind thriller about a man named Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy) who suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), making him composed of 23 different personalities. One of his more sinister personalities, “Dennis,” coerces him into kidnapping three girls, Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy), Claire (Haley Lu Richardson) and Marcia (Jessica Sula), in broad daylight and throwing them in a dungeon. Throughout their captivity, the girls grasp onto different tactics in order to operate around Kevin’s clever yet ruptured mind. From Ms. Patricia the perfectionist to Barry the fashion designer, the girls witness it all. But before Kevin’s 24th personality “The Beast” can peek its head out, the girls must find a way to escape, once and for all.
'Candyman' (2021)
You know how they say one moment can change it all? Well, that’s definitely the case for Chicago artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen). After recently moving to Cabrini-Green, a town that’s been notably categorized for having an inexplicable killer with a hook for a hand, Anthony decides to explore the history more in depth. Little does he know his harmless exploration has caused the infamous Candyman to come back to life, causing a series of murders. It’s only a matter of time before he starts to succumb to Candyman, himself.
'Halloween Kills'
Halloween, a time for lots of candy and costumes — but not for the town of Haddonfield. Once again, Michael Meyers is back; but prior to his bloodbath, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) captured him and burned him to his death —or so they thought. Now that he’s on the loose, Laurie takes matters into her own and joins forces with the whole town of Haddonfield to finally put an end to the guy in the William Shatner mask, once and for all.
'House At The End Of The Street'
The House At the End Of The Street explores the beauty of having neighbors—or should I say, the horror of having neighbors? When Elissa (Jennifer Lawrence) and her mom move to a small town for a fresh start, they are greeted by the mysterious Ryan (Max Theiriot), and soon he Elissa and develop a romantic relationship. But when unfathomable events start to transpire, Elissa’s suspicions run high, leading her to do some investigating. Let’s just say, she might find herself being held in captivity if she doesn’t make a run for it.
'Us'
Directed by Jordan Peele, Us follows the Wilson family as they take a getaway to Santa Cruz, California. One night, they are startled by four people breaking into the house. But they’re not just any four people. When the intruders remove their masks, the family is shocked to see their grotesque doppelgängers. What started off as a holiday has now turned into a night of survival.
'Sinister' (2012)
When crime author Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) finds himself with writer’s block, he packs up his life and family and settles into a house that holds quite the dark secret. After stumbling upon some home videos that reveal several murders, Ellison becomes obssessed and dives deep into extensive research. But Ellison will soon find out about the beast he may have unleashed.,,
'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' (2003)
There’s no going wrong with any of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre films. The 2003 remake starring Jessica Biel examines a group of friends as they come across an isolated home in Texas. Sadly for them, the house happens to belong to a serial killing family and the well known chainsaw killer, Leatherface (Andrew Bryniarski). And before you know it, the group is being hunted down by… You guess it: Leatherface. Who will survive? Probably Leatherface.
