Netflix has debuted its first full-length trailer for the Indian dark comedy Darlings, starring Alia Bhatt as a vengeful wife looking to get revenge on her abusive husband, played by Vijay Varma.
The movie is described as “a dark comedy drama which explores the lives of a mother-daughter duo trying to find their place in Mumbai, seeking courage and love in exceptional circumstances while fighting against all odds.”
The trailer begins with Varma’s character, Hamza, talking about his love for his wife but confessing that he’s leaving her. Meanwhile, a red-lipped and dressed-up Badru (Bhatt) appears to be getting ready for a night on the town with her husband. Although, it quickly flashes to a black-eyed Badru making a clumsy police report alongside her mother about Hamza, who has recently gone “missing.”
The tone of the trailer quickly changes once we realize they had been the ones who kidnapped him all along. Black-and-white flashbacks show the physical abuse Hamza inflicted on Badru, and as a result, this vengeful wife promises to do to her husband exactly what he did to her. With the help of her mother, played by Shefali Shah, we get the mother-daughter duo of the year as they beat him, drug him, and poison him.
The film, which is directed by Jasmeet K. Reen, will also star Roshan Mathew as Zulfi.
In an Instagram post, Bhatt captioned the trailer saying, “My first film as a producer!! So excited nervous thrilled emotional to share it with you!!!!”
While this may be Bhatt’s first time producing, she has previously starred in the epic action drama film RRR, the romantic comedy Badrinath Ki Dulhania, and the musical drama Gully Boy. Producing alongside her is Gauri Khan and Gaurav Verma.
Darlings is set to premiere Aug. 5 on Netflix.
