Paul Sorvino, ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘Law & Order’ Star, Dead at 83

Goodfellas actor Paul Sorvino has died. He was 83.

Sorvino died Monday morning, his rep confirmed to TMZ.  His wife, Dee Dee, was reportedly by his side at the time of his death.

“Our hearts are broken, there will never be another Paul Sorvino, he was the love of my life, and one of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen and stage,” Dee Dee said in a statement shared with TMZ.

Sorvino, who was the father of actress Mira Sorvino, began his film and television career in the ’70s after training at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy and learning from Sanford Meisner and William Esper, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sorvino’s first screen credit came in 1970, when he played the Owner of ‘Gus & Grace’s Home’ in Carl Reiner’s Where’s Poppa? Later in the decade, he went on to appear in The Panic in Needle ParkThe Day of the Dolphin and The Gambler.

His role as Paul Cicero in Goodfellas came years later, in 1990. He starred in the iconic Martin Scorsese mob film alongside Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci and Lorraine Bracco.

Sorvino was also well-known for his role on Law & Order, which he starred in for one season from 1991-1992 before leaving the show. While the Dick Wolff series remains a beloved TV fixture, Sorvino wasn’t so fond of Law & Order. In fact, he compared his experience in the crime drama to being in a “Russian gulag,” explaining, “there was absolutely no communication with the writers and the producers, and we had to work under the worst conditions,” per THR.

In recent years, Sorvino appeared in Elementary, The Goldbergs, Grandfathered, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders and Godfather of Harlem. He is set to posthumously appear in Pursued and The Ride.

Sorvino is survived by his wife, as well as Mira and his two other children — Amanda and Michael — and five grandchildren, per Deadline.
