Boycott Hulu? Democrats Blast Streamer For Rejecting Gun, Abortion Attack Ads

Hulu sparked Twitter outrage on Tuesday morning after the streamer refused to air advertisements from Democrats aimed at the GOP. Variety reports that both Hulu and Disney (which owns the streamer) have come under attack from Democratic politicians for their decision to reject commercials about guns and abortion.

#BoycottHulu was trending on Twitter this morning after the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Democratic Governors Association all shared their grievances with Hulu to The Washington Post, per Variety. The organizations said Hulu turned down a joint ad they wanted to run about abortion and guns.

While the ad aired on Facebook, YouTube, and Roku, as well as certain cable channels, Hulu shut down the commercial because of its content, a Hulu representative said, per The Verge. While Hulu later said it would run the organizations’ ads, they quickly reversed their decision and claimed an email accepting the ads was sent by mistake.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee sent out a tweet on Monday calling out Hulu for its policy. The organization wrote, “@Hulu’s censorship of the truth is outrageous and offensive. Voters have the right to know the facts about MAGA Republicans’ extreme agenda on abortion – Hulu is doing a huge disservice to the American people.”

Hulu’s ad controversy comes shortly after Disney+ shared additional details about its forthcoming ad-supported tier, which will be selective in its advertising. The streamer will not air commercials about politics or alcohol, Variety reported in May.

Sources told the outlet that Disney+ would also refuse to air advertisements for other streamers and would be selective of what content it airs for younger viewers. While Disney+ is setting strict guidelines for its ads, Hulu does not have a similar set of restrictions.

A rep for Hulu did not immediately respond to Decider’s request for comment.
