“Salty” Retta Throws Blame for ‘Good Girls’ Cancellation: “One Person Ruined it for All of Cast and Crew”

Retta mourned the messy end of her beloved crime dramedy Good Girls during an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan earlier this week, going so far as to blame an anonymous member of production for the show’s entire downfall.

Retta, who starred on the show as Ruby Hill, didn’t name names, but did place blame when Kelly Ripa asked her if Good Girls is coming back.

“It is not,” Retta replied. “We were very close to a fifth season, but one person ruined it for all of cast and crew and so it’s not back.”

Ripa asked, “If one person ruins it for cast and crew, can you just get rid of the one person and then bring in another person?”

But Retta was realistic, responding, “I think it was a little too close to when they would have to start and figure out story, so no,” before adding, “trust me Kelly, I’m salty!”

Retta even admitted she had dreamed up her own way to get around the mystery problem person and carry on with Good Girls, explaining, “I was literally like, okay, maybe there was a bomb scare at some point and then a bomb actually went off and that’s why that person is gone.”

Along with Retta, Good Girls also stars Christina Hendricks, Mae Whitman, Reno Wilson, Manny Montana, Lidya Jewett, Isaiah Stannard and Matthew Lillard. The show first premiered in 2018 and ran for four seasons, but was canceled last year ahead of Season 5; plans to move Good Girls to Netflix after NBC canceled the show never panned out.

Retta, Hendricks and Whitman had all reportedly agreed to pay cuts for a potential shortened fifth season, TV Line reported last year, but the show was axed for good before production could begin.

While Retta did not name the individual who “ruined” Good Girls Season 5 during her Live with Kelly and Ryan appearance, TV Line’s report suggests Montana could have been the one. Shortly after the news of Good Girls‘ cancellation broke, TV Line reported that negotiations over pay and scheduling fell through with Montana.
