‘The Witcher’ Forced to Halt Production on Season 3 Over COVID-19

Netflix has paused production on The Witcher because of COVID-19. The streamer, which is currently working on the third season of their hit fantasy series, announced that production was being put on hold because of the virus, but did not specify who, if anyone, had contracted COVID-19 or how many people tested positive on set, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Henry Cavill, the star of The Witcher, is rumored to have tested positive for COVID-19, but Netflix did not confirm or deny if the online rumblings were true. Instead, the streamer issued a statement saying production on The Witcher was “paused due to COVID and we will be up and running as soon as it is safe to do so,” per THR.

The recent pause in production marks the second time The Witcher has been interrupted by COVID-19. The show also halted filming Season 2 in November 2020 after multiple people on the show’s UK set tested positive for the virus. The show was forced to halt production again just months later when Cavill injured his leg in December 2020.

Season 3 of The Witcher is just the latest installment in the fantasy franchise. Netflix is also working on a prequel titled The Witcher: Blood Origin, plus a family-friendly Witcher series.

When The Witcher returns for Season 3, we can expect plenty of excitement in store for Cavill and his castmates — check out the official logline for the upcoming season, per Netflix: “As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it.

“Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery,” the description continues. “They must fight back, put everything on the line – or risk losing each other forever.”

The Witcher Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Netflix.
