‘Blonde’ Trailer Blasted for Exploiting Marilyn Monroe: A “Sick Fantasy”

Blonde is turning heads as Netflix’s first NC-17 film. The biopic, which stars Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe, is a controversial reimagining on the Hollywood icon’s life that director Andrew Dominik said will “offend everyone” — and since the streamer released its first full-length trailer yesterday (July 28), it’s safe to say the offending has commenced.

People took to Twitter to blast the upcoming film, calling it a “violent fantasy,” likely due to its sexually explicit content — and in particular, a sexual assault scene taken from Joyce Carol Oates’ book in which the movie is based on, as confirmed by Dominik in an interview with Screen Daily

“I’m not covering #Blonde in any capacity,” one critic wrote. “I think an NC-17 violent fantasy about #MarilynMonroe presenting itself as a biography — or even if it was upfront about being a fantasy — is pretty appalling.”

She went on to write, “Anyone who defends #Blonde as art simply doesn’t want to feel guilty about watching violent rape porn that’s totally fictional — it’s been admitted that event is made up — you’re not even calling attention to something that actually happened to Monroe. It’s just sick fantasy.”

Another person commented back saying, “I agree. She’s had a hard enough life while she was here, and Hollywood is still trying to milk her story.”

“Can’t believe Ana would sign onto that…” a third person chimed in.

“The thing about Marilyn Monroe is that her entire life was full of exploitation,” someone else noted. “You can’t make a movie about her, biogeographical or fictitious, without acknowledging that. The issue isn’t that Blonde is doing what it’s doing. It’s that it’s doing it in the ways that it is.”

Others, however, are looking forward to seeing de Armas as the blonde bombshell.

“This is sensational! In only 8 seconds, we have all we need to say that #AnaDeArmas will be extraordinary in this movie! Cannot wait!” one Twitter user posted about a clip from the trailer.

Someone else said, “This made me legit cry. She’ll get an Oscar for this,” while another wrote, “I might be just a little too excited for this movie.”

Blonde premieres Sept. 28 on Netflix.
