Is ‘Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin’ Connected to the Freeform Show?

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin may share the thrills and love of troublesome teens of its predecessor. But that’s not the only thing these series have in common. Original Sin has more in common with Pretty Little Liars than merely its name.

But how exactly are these two series related? Will we be seeing cameos from our first batch of liars? And what sort of Easter eggs can we expect? We know you have questions, and we have answers.

How Is Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin Connected to Pretty Little Liars?

Though this new series is set in the same universe and shares the same continuity as the original Pretty Little Liars, we’re in a whole new world. Whereas the prequel series took place in Rosewood, Pa., Original Sin takes place a few towns over in the fictional Millwood. The bottom line? Like with Ravensood and The Perfectionists, Spencer, Ella, Hanna, and Aria do exist in this new series. But whereas Rosewood was a cute, predominantly middle class small town, Millwood is far more blue collar. It’s unlikely that these two series will cross paths, at least initially.

There are two elements connecting Pretty Little Liars to Original Sin: secrets, and “A.” Our liars may be different and they may be haunted by both their sins and the sins of their mothers, but they still have their own mysteries. They’re also being haunted by another obsessive monster who goes by the first letter of the alphabet.

“To be true to the PLL universe and franchise, there’s always the big mystery: who is A? But there were always dozens of smaller, more personal mysteries that were sort of percolating along,” showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told Decider.  “Absolutely, each of the girls has a secret. A lot of our characters have multiple secrets.”

The “A” connection is an especially interesting one. By the end of Pretty Little Liars, several characters had donned the identity of “A.” Is our foe in Original Sin one of them? Or were they simply inspired by “A”s reign of terror? To unravel this particular mystery, we’ll have to keep watching.

Will the Pretty Little Liars Cast Return for Original Sin?

At the moment, we don’t know if anyone from the original series will appear in this new series. But we do know that we can expect some Easter eggs.

“Once you hit Episode 6, the Easter eggs — and more than Easter eggs — start coming fast and furiously,” Aguirre-Sacasa revealed in an interview with TVLine.

“Knowing that the fanbase of the original Pretty Little Liars is so strong, we wanted to make sure we gave some fan service to them. But we’re also our own story and our own thing, so we hope that will be exciting for them,” showrunner Lindsay Calhoon Bring added.
