‘Real Time’: Chris Cuomo Tells Bill Maher He “Lost A Sense Of Purpose” After CNN Exit

Last night on HBO‘s Real Time With Bill Maher, former CNN host Chris Cuomo sat down with Maher for a 1:1 interview where he discussed his exit from the network.

Cuomo mainly appeared on the show to promote his recently launched podcast—The Chris Cuomo Project—about which Maher asked if he was happy it was gaining attention. Cuomo was fired from CNN in December amid details emerging that he advised his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, on how to handle the media in response to allegations of sexual harassment.

“Happy — probably not the right word,” Cuomo replied. “I feel like I lost a sense of purpose for a while because of how things ended.”

Cuomo spoke about the political polarization in America and said his goal with his future projects is to be “breaking through the toxic twosome of partisan politics and speaking to the vast body of people in this country who are just regular, and they want things to make sense.”

Maher mentioned that there are reports pointing to CNN’s ratings being down significantly in Cuomo’s former time slot since his departure. He asked Cuomo if that felt good, to which he said it doesn’t since he doesn’t believe in schadenfreude. “It’s a great organization, and they’re great people there,” he said. “I want good things for people there. I don’t like how it ended. I had a great team I didn’t get to say goodbye to. I just want to move on.”

The next topic that came up was Cuomo’s brother Andrew, who resigned as governor of New York in August. Maher asked how he was doing to which Chris replied: “I’m supposed to say, ‘Oh, he’s great,’ but that would be what we call bullshit, right?” he asked rhetorically. “He has been in a struggle, and I have watched it, and I am proud of how he’s handling himself.”

Cuomo also talked about his recently announced primetime show on NewsNation that is scheduled to debut on the cable network this fall: “I’m going to NewsNation because I believe in insurgent media, and I think NewsNation has a chance to not be seen as groupthink.”
