‘Batgirl’ Movie Shelved By Warner Bros. Discovery: Reports

Warner Bros. Discovery is reportedly saying goodbye to millions and millions of dollars as they are completely shelving their Batgirl movie, which will now neither be released theatrically, nor on HBO Max as previously planned.

The $70 million movie, which a source told the New York Post was actually more than $100 million, won’t be released, despite wrapping filming last spring. The film, which was slated for a late 2022 release, was doing test screenings for audiences and they were allegedly so poorly received, the studio decided to abandon the nearly-finished project altogether. The report, which originally appeared in the Post, was also backed up by The Hollywood Reporter.

The new DC installment was supposed to feature In the Heights star Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl as well as J.K. Simmons, Jacob Scipio, Brendan Fraser, and Michael Keaton (who played Batman in the 1989 and 1992 films).

Batgirl was originally planned for an HBO Max release but it was reported that then-chair Toby Emmerich was considering a theatrical run for the film. Though once he stepped down in June, there hadn’t been much word on the future of the movie.

According to The Wrap, insiders said the new Warner Bros. Discovery regime intends on making DC films big theatrical events, adding that Batgirl didn’t have what it takes. Although, they did add that the studio loves the director and star and plan to work with them soon.

I guess this will be yet another DC film Michael Keaton will never have the chance to see.
