Joy Behar Sneers at Whoopi Goldberg’s Compliment on ‘The View’: “What Brought That Up?”

Joy Behar turned her nose up at kind words from her co-host Whoopi Goldberg on today’s episode of The View. Behar was caught off guard by Goldberg’s compliment, which she dropped seemingly out of the blue during a conversation about WNBA star Brittney Griner.

The uncomfortable moment happened as The View discussed the latest update in Griner’s case after the athlete was found guilty by a Russian court and faces up to nine years in prison for drug smuggling after bringing cannabis oil into the country in her luggage.

Goldberg said, “legal systems seem to have disparities, always,” while comparing the U.S. and Russia’s respective legal processes, and continued, “our’s is the closest to trying to get it together, because here we can say, ‘that’s not right,’ and we can go out and protest. You can’t do that so much in Russia.”

She then swiftly moved on from the topic with a quick aside, turning to her co-host and saying, “Anyhoo, you look good, Joy.”

Behar asked, “Do I?” and Goldberg repeated, “You do” but Behar was skeptical, making a face and asking her, “What brought that up?”

Before Goldberg could reply, Sunny Hostin could be heard in the background offering her own praise to Behar, whom she told, “You look very svelte.”

Goldberg then explained herself after Behar’s reaction, simply telling her, “It’s called, I looked over, and it’s a compliment.”

Even Sara Haines chimed in at that point, encouraging Behar to just accept the kind words and move on. “Joy, we say, ‘thank you!'” Haines joked.

Goldberg added, “there was nothing I could do except say you look good.”

That was enough convincing for Behar, who begrudgingly responded, “Thank you, Whoopi.” As Goldberg triumphantly replied, “You’re welcome!” Behar just shook her head and laughed as the audience cheered.

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
