It’s time for family fun this weekend thanks to this week’s new movies on VOD! Universal Pictures’ Minions: The Rise of Gru, a prequel to Despicable Me that offers insight into Gru’s origins, is now out on VOD, as is Disney/Pixar’s Lightyear which, in similar fashion, tells Buzz Lightyear’s origin story.

Not interested in watching a movie with the kids? How about Resurrection, a movie that the majority of reviews calls “deranged”? In the film, Rebecca Hall stars as Margaret, a woman who has established herself as a career-driven single mother who has succeeded in spite of a horrific, abusive past at the hands of a former lover, David (Tim Roth). When David reappears in Margaret’s life after two decades, she begins to suffer panic attacks and trembles at the sight of him. Ultimately, she reveals the most terrible, awful thing that David did, and why she simultaneously fears him and is desperate to kill him. It’s…grotesque. Deranged, even! But it’s what fuels Margaret’s panic and the film’s disturbing twists which veer from straight up revenge to something out of a psychological, supernatural horror.

Minions: The Rise of Gru

Minions: The Rise of Gru is the fifth film in the Despicable Me franchise, and the second prequel. (Who knew we’d one day be able to debate whether to watch the Minions movies in chronological vs. timeline order?! I really wouldn’t have predicted it.) While the 2015 film Minions focused on the origin story of our little yellow evil-doers, The Rise of Gru focuses on, yes, the rise of Gru. In this story, we meet Gru as a young boy, desperate to be a member of the Vicious 6, a villain supergroup led by Belle Bottom (Taraji P. Henson). Gru is kidnapped by the former leader of the Vicious 6, Wild Knuckles (a delightful, as always, Alan Arkin), complicating Gru’s situation when he realizes he has a choice now of villains to team up with.

Lightyear

Lightyear has its detractors, those who don’t love the fact that Chris Evans, and not Tim Allen, voiced the beloved astronaut from the Toy Story franchise, and the film, despite making over $200 million at the box office, was considered a financial disappointment. The film, which also stars Keke Palmer, Uzo Aduba, and James Brolin, tells the origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the “human space ranger” on whom the toy that starred in the previous films, was based, featuring a fantastical plot that bends time and adds even more complexity to Buzz’s relationship with Zurg, who is not technically Buzz’s father, but… Buzz himself? It’s a whole thing. (It’s worth noting that Lightyear showed up on Disney+ this week, too.)
