Hulu Claims ‘Prey’ Is Their Biggest Premiere of All Time, Film And TV

Prey is smashing records at Hulu, according to Hulu. The streamer claims that the sci-fi thriller has premiered as the No. 1 title on Hulu to date, beating out all previous film and series debuts, but both Hulu and 20th Century Studios — the film’s distributor — did not share specific stats.

While it’s breaking unknown barriers at Hulu, Prey is also seemingly setting records abroad, becoming the most watched film premiere on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ in other international territories. The unidentified hours watched were collected from the amount of time Prey was viewed in its first three days on the platforms.

Prey ousted another Hulu title to become the No. 1 release to date on the streamer; Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti‘s Palm Springs previously held the record for the biggest opening weekend film debut on the streaming service in 2020. Similarly, Hulu did not provide specific numbers for Palm Springs.

It’s not hard to see why Prey has seen such a successful streaming debut after critics raved about the movie. Decider’s Johnny Loftus praised the film in his Prey movie review, writing, “Prey returns the Predator franchise to what made it great to begin with, incorporating the classic tactics and weapons of its titular galactic hunter against an inspiring, game new quarry.”

The hit film follows a young warrior named Naru, who must protect her people from a mysterious predator. The official film’s description reads, “The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.”

The Dan Trachtenberg film is the latest installment in the Predator franchise, which began with Predator in 1987 and was followed by 1990’s Predator 2, 2010’s Predators and 2018’s The Predator.

Prey stars Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, Julian Black Antelope, and Dane DiLiegro. The film is now streaming on Hulu.
