Disney+ Announces Price Hike, Launch Date for Lower-Priced Ad Tier

Disney+ is changing their game. The company announced today that a cheaper, ad-supported plan called Disney+ Basic is set to launch in the U.S. on Dec. 8. Further, they are planning to hike their prices for both the ad-free tier, as well as Hulu.

Disney+ Basic will cost the same amount that the current ad-free version is priced at: $7.99 per month. Meanwhile, the ad-free version, now known as Disney+ Premium, will be bumped up to $10.99 per month. So, we won’t be paying less than we already do, but now we get the option to avoid the price hike (with the addition of ads, of course). But the good news is that both plans will have the same content, and some titles may not even run ads.

Beginning Oct. 10, Hulu’s ad-supported plan will raise from $6.99 to $7.99 per month, and the ad-free version will move from $12.99 to $14.99 per month. The Disney Bundle — Hulu with ads, Disney+ with no ads, and ESPN+ — will go from $13.99 to $14.99 per month and the premium version of the bundle — Hulu with no ads, Disney+ with no ads, and ESPN+ — will stay at $19.99 per month.

ESPN+ rates, which will go into effect Aug. 23, are also set to move up a few dollars from $6.99 to $9.99.

“With our new ad-supported Disney+ offering and an expanded lineup of plans across our entire streaming portfolio, we will be providing greater consumer choice at a variety of price points to cater to the diverse needs of our viewers and appeal to an even broader audience,” Kareem Daniel, chairman of Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution, said in a statement, per Variety.

This news comes after Disney+ reported a 14.4 million increase in subscribers during the third quarter of 2022. The company, which also owns a stake in Hulu and ESPN+, also reported growth in both of the other platforms, bringing its total subscriber reach up to 221 million.
