Rosie O’Donnell Gives Melanie Field “Greatest Compliment” After Comparing Their ‘A League of Their Own’ Characters

They may have different names, but the bond is still the same. The cast of the Prime Video series, A League of Their Ownbroke down the different ways they played homage to the original 1992 film, including a specific recounting of time actress Melanie Field got her “stamp of approval” from Rosie O’Donnell on the set of the show.

Field and D’Arcy Carden play Jo and Greta, respectively, in the new series. And viewers were quick to notice that the bonding between the two characters emulates that of original characters Doris (O’Donnell) and Mae (Madonna) in the film. In fact, O’Donnell, who guest stars in the series as a new character named Vi, also picked up on the similarities.

“I remember [O’Donnell] walked in the room and she was like, ‘Oh, it’s the me to me.’ And I was like, ‘This is the greatest compliment I’ve ever received in my life,'” Field told ET. “It felt a lot to have her stamp of approval on it because she was such an iconic figure from the movie.”

Carden added that it was “the best, like, the funniest, most Rosie thing,” but clarified that they “weren’t trying to play them.”

“The pairing of the two is a little kiss to the movie,” she said. “I just love that all these characters become themselves, their own thing.”

The eight-episode TV series, which takes place in the 1940s, is adapted from the 1992 classic film of the same name and follows the creation of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL).

The new series further stars Abbi Jacobson, who also co-created the show, as well as Chanté Adams, Kelly McCormack, Roberta Colindrez, Nick Offerman, and more.

A League of Their Own is currently streaming on Prime Video.
