After fans and critics lashed out against Savannah Guthrie for being late for her anchoring duties at The Today Show Thursday morning (Aug. 11), social media was much quieter today as business carried on pretty much as usual. Well, with the exception of Hoda Kotb, who has taken a couple days off this week — fueling the rumor mill that the two ladies do not get along.

In an Instagram reel posted to Guthrie’s account yesterday morning, the host, who is slated to appear on the show at 7 a.m., wrote, “Overslept big time. It’s 6:34 a.m. and I’m still in the car.” She walked onto the set six minutes before going live.

During the taping, Guthrie pointed out that regular co-anchor, Kotb, had the morning off, to which fill-in Craig Melvin quipped, “You almost had the morning off as well.”

He continued, “Savannah Guthrie rolled in about 15 minutes ago, she overslept! She is normal!”

Guthrie pointed out that 15 minutes prior she had “no hair, no makeup” and said it was “a terrifying sight,” adding that “some miracle workers upstairs rolled me in and I’m very happy to be here.”

One “TV insider” told Page Six that Guthrie purposefully showed up late to show NBC News “who is the boss and that they can’t do the show without her,” while another claimed that it had to do with the rumors of tension surrounding her and Kotb.

The second source told the outlet, “Savannah and Hoda are very tense around each other. Savannah was furious when Hoda was brought into the first hour of the show, she wants to be the queen bee, and flipped out on producers,” adding that there is an “underlying competitiveness” between the two.

However, a Today spokesperson told Page Six, “Everything in this story is demonstrably false. Savannah overslept, plain and simple. She was coming in to work from upstate New York this morning. She keeps her phone on ‘Do Not Disturb’ overnight, aside from a small group of people who can reach her.”

They continued, “Her driver tried to call her, but he is not in the group who could reach her, so she didn’t wake up. When the show producer called her, she woke up and rushed in.”

Despite the gossip that has been circling for weeks, Guthrie also took to Instagram on Tuesday to celebrate Kotb’s birthday, writing, “She is our sunshine, happy birthday, @hodakotb!!!” under a series of photos.

The Today Show airs daily at 7 a.m. on NBC.
