‘Better Call Saul’ Fans React to the Series Finale: “Best Show of All Time”

It’s been 14 years and 11 seasons in the making, but now it’s finally over. This Monday (August 15) marked the series finale of Better Call Saul, Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould’s sequel series to Breaking Bad. It was a historic moment in television and arguably one of the biggest moments of scripted TV in all of 2022. And as Twitter can attest to, it absolutely delivered on the mountain of hype the series has been promising since Season 1. Spoilers ahead.

As many, including this very site, predicted, Better Call Saul ended with Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) staring down jail time. But thanks to his expertise finessing, Jimmy trimmed a prison sentence that was supposed to be over 100 years long down to seven. At least that was the case until Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn) came back to Albuquerque. It seemed as though Jimmy was poised to sell out the love of his life and his old legal partner until he made eye contact with her in the court room. That’s when Jimmy did something he’s rarely ever done: tell the truth. By the end of his confession to the judge, Jimmy’s seven years jumped up to 86.

Better Call Saul’s final moments took place in Jimmy’s new prison. Claiming to be his lawyer, Kim came to visit him. That’s when Jimmy and Kim shared yet another cigarette — a nod back to how their entire journey began. You can check out Decider’s full guide to the finale.

Shortly after the finale ended, fans took to Twitter to sing their praises about the legal thriller. Some focused on how Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould’s well-paced and years-long masterpiece will likely never be replicated again:

But most fans on Twitter were simply in awe of what they had just watched. As high as the expectations for this finale were, it seems as though Better Call Saul delivered on them. This last episode has been called “the best ending possible for the best series ever,” “the best show of all time,” and the closest thing we have to “a modern day Shakespearean tragedy.”

For most of us, it’s going to take a few days to comprehend the level of emotional and narrative mastery that went into this finale. But for now, we can only stand in awe of Saul Goodman. Once again, he’s managed to pull off a show for the ages, and we can’t look away.
