‘House of the Dragon’ Episode Guide: How Many Episodes in the ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel?

The mega-hyped Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon finally premiered on HBO and HBO Max last night. The first episode took us back in time to when the Targaryens ruled over Westeros and soared on their dragons above King’s Landing. The House of the Dragon premiere even ends with a mic drop moment, connecting the story of the Targaryen dynasty directly to the White Walkers of Game of Thrones. It was, suffice to say, an epic start to a new fantasy series. But what happens next? How many episodes are going to be in House of the Dragon Season 1?

House of the Dragon takes place about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The biggest problem facing the realm is who will eventually inherit the Iron Throne after the current king, Viserys I (Paddy Considine), dies. Convention dictates that the next male Targaryen in line for the throne should be the heir, but Viserys’s younger brother Daemon (Matt Smith) is a tempestuous dragon lord who makes many on the Small Council, specifically Hand of the King Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), nervous.

When Viserys’s wife dies giving birth to a male heir who doesn’t survive, Viserys decides to name his smart and spirited daughter Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) as his heir. One small hiccup to this foolproof plan… What if Viserys remarries and his new wife has a male heir?? Just saying there’s clearly some reason Otto Hightower has asked his pretty teen daughter Alicent (Emily Carey) to “comfort” the grieving king…

House of the Dragon promises to focus in on the self-destruction of Westeros’s most powerful family. There will be dragon battles, bitter backstabbing, and lots of fire and lots of blood. So how can you make sure you don’t miss a minute of the drama? Here’s your guide to all the episodes in House of the Dragon Season 1…
