Is ‘Breaking’ Streaming on HBO Max or Netflix?

You’ve seen him tackle evil space empires, now watch John Boyega fight a much smaller—but no less vital—battle in Breaking, a new thriller opening in movie theaters this weekend.

Directed by Abi Damaris Corbin, who also co-wrote the script with Kwame Kwei-Armah, Breaking stars Boyega as Brian Brown-Easley, a real-life former Marine veteran who finds himself in deep financial trouble. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and, in Brian’s case, that leads to robbing a Wells Fargo bank in 2017.

Based on the incredible true story, Breaking is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. More than that, the film is one of the final roles for the late Emmy-nominated actor Michael K. Willaims, who died suddenly last year at the age of 54.

Here’s what you need to know about how to watch Breaking, including when to expect Breaking to become available on streaming.

WHERE TO WATCH BREAKING:

For now, the only way to watch Breaking is in a movie theater. The film opens in U.S. theaters on Friday, August 26. You can find a showing near you via Fandango. After the film’s theatrical run, you will be able to purchase Breaking on digital platforms like Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, and more.

WHEN WILL BREAKING BE STREAMING?

The short answer is: We don’t yet know. That said, we can make an educated guess. Breaking is being released in the U.S. by Bleeker Street Films. Another recent Bleeker release, Mr. Malcolm’s List was released in U.S. theaters on July 1 and was released on digital platforms on July 21, after only two and a half weeks in theaters. If Breaking follows a similar release strategy, then you may be able to buy or rent the film online as soon as mid-September 2022.

WILL BREAKING BE ON HBO MAX?

No. Breaking will not be on HBO Max at the same time it is in theaters, because it is not a Warner Bros. film, and because HBO Max will no longer be streaming theatrical movies in 2022. (Last year, Warner Bros. opted to simultaneously release its theatrical slate on streaming, meaning HBO Max subscribers could watch movies like Matrix Resurrections at home. This year, however, Warner Bros. theatrical movies will have a 45-day theaters-only run before moving to HBO Max.) It’s possible that Breaking will be on HBO and HBO Max someday, but it will not be any time soon.

IS BREAKING STREAMING ON NETFLIX?

No. Breaking is not streaming on Netflix, and there are no known plans to bring Breaking  to Netflix any time soon. If you want to see the film, your best bet is to go to a movie theater or to wait for the digital release, likely in September 2022.
