‘Echoes’ Ending, Explained: Which Twin is in the Final Scene? Leni or Gina?

Netflix‘s new limited series Echoes reminds us all there’s nothing like a twin sister swap to shake up TV.

The dramatic series, written and created by Vanessa Gazy, follows two identical twin sisters, Leni and Gina McCleary, who have an annual tradition of swapping lives on their birthday and living in each other’s shoes until the next one. Their plan seems perfectly crafted, but when one twin mysteriously goes missing everything starts to unravel.

If you’ve sped through all seven episodes of the limited series or just need to skip to the spoilers to calm your nerves, we’ve got you covered. Read on for a plot summary of Netflix’s Echoes, along with the Echoes ending, explained.

As you may have guessed, major Echoes spoilers lie ahead. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

What is Netflix’s Limited Series, EchoesEchoes Plot Summary:

The twins, Leni and Gina — both played by Michelle Monaghan — are very different. Leni works as a horse farmer in her hometown of Mount Echo, Virginia, while Gina is an author in Los Angeles. Despite the distance, the two are incredibly close. Like, leave each other messages in an online journal kind of close. But when Gina stops hearing from Leni she starts to worry.

Leni’s husband Jack Beck (Bomer) calls Gina to report his wife is missing, and she hops on a flight to back home to take part in the search alongside family and Sheriff Louise Floss (Karen Robinson). Gina revisits places from her childhood, and we eventually learn she’s actually Leni, which means Gina was the missing twin all along. Hmm…

Echoes Ending, Explained

The show started with twin twists, and you better believe it ends with some, too. After learning that Gina was trying to escape the annual life-swap situation that Leni forced her into, it made sense why she’d want to start a new life away from home. But the finale — interspersed with flashbacks from their past — shows the twins together again standing inside their childhood home, which is engulfed in flames. They sprint outside to safety, leaving their dad inside to die, and Gina tries to escape Leni on horseback but fails.

The twins start fighting near the edge of a waterfall and we learn Leni was traumatized as a child by seeing their dad drown their mom in the bathtub one night. Gina explains that their mom and dad planned the death, and that she wanted him to put her out of her misery because she had a terminal illness.

“That one thing that you believed, that wasn’t true, it started everything,” Gina screamed before throwing herself backwards off the cliff, presumably to her death.

We don’t see Gina’s body, but the police think Leni started the fire. She meets with an attorney, says goodbye to Mattie at school, and police search to arrest her, but she’s already at the airport embarking on an escape to Australia. When she reaches security, a woman checks her passport and asks if she came past her yesterday because she looks so familiar. This comment implies that the security woman saw Gina, who is likely still alive and escaped right before Leni.

In the closing scene, we see Gina’s ex-husband Charlie giving a reading of his new book Leni and Gina, about the girls’ “twinship.” During the Q and A portion of the event a woman in back — wearing black, a large hat, and sunglasses — asks if they ever found the body of the twin who committed suicide at the falls. Charlie says no, his wife was never found, and the woman leaves.

When Charlie gets home the same woman (or a different one?!) is waiting for him, and he’s barely surprised to see her. He makes a comment about never changing the locks, then fixes drinks and confronts her about being at his reading. She acts confused, which leads us to believe both twins may be in town — but will we ever know?

The two toast each other and Charlie says, “I’ll find out, you know…which one you are.” She replies, “Maybe. Maybe even I don’t know anymore.” He asks why she came back and she replies, “So many scores to settle, Charlie. I thought I should start with you.” The end credits roll, and we’re left to wonder: which twin is which?

Which Twin Is At The End of Echoes? Is Leni or Gina in the Last Scene of Echoes?

While we may never know whether the real Leni or Gina ended the series with Charlie, Monaghan thinks it’s Leni.

“I had to creatively make a choice,” Monaghan told Tudum. “So I chose Leni. I think Gina was at the bookstore. I made that choice too.”

“I think Gina definitely gets a happy ending,” Monaghan explained. “I think Leni will get a happy ending, too. She’ll just find it anywhere. She’ll make it happen one way or another.”

Will There Be A Season 2 of Echoes?

Currently Netflix hasn’t announced any plans to renew Echoes for a Season 2, but it’s still possible even thought the story was originally intended to be a limited series. Considering both twins are probably still alive, and scores need to be settled, there’s a lot left to explore should Echoes return for more. Decider will update this article if Echoes does get renewed.
