HBO Renews ‘House of the Dragon’ For Second Season

HBO has already renewed House of the Dragon for a second season following blowout ratings from its series premiere on Sunday.

The show set an HBO record by attracting 10 million viewers overnight, which Game of Thrones didn’t achieve until Season 6. HBO has since reported that the show’s first episode’s viewership had reached 20 million viewers just days after the premiere in the U.S. across linear, on demand and HBO Max platforms.

“We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with season one,” says Francesca Orsi, EVP of HBO programming. “Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV.”

She added: “A huge thank you [to co-creator and executive producer George R.R. Martin and co-creator and showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik] for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two.”

The network had been confident all along that it would greenlight another season, especially if ratings were strong.

This renewal could mean big things for the Game of Thrones universe as the platform has at least seven spinoff projects in development (four scripted, at least three animated).

It has not yet been revealed when Season 2 will premiere or how many episodes it will have.

Season 1 of the show required 10 months of filming and a great deal of postproduction visual effects work, which began in January and is still ongoing. Due to these production challenges, The Hollywood Reporter is guessing at 2024 return with 10 new episodes.

House of the Dragon stars Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen.
