‘House of the Dragon’ Episode 3 Teaser Trailer Reveals Prince Aegon, a Time Jump, and the War in the Stepstones

House of the Dragon Season 1 Episode 2 “The Rogue Prince” showed us just how fractured the Targaryen family has become in this era of Game of Thrones. The second episode of the HBO show had Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) stealing a dragon egg for attention, Viserys (Paddy Considine) struggling to communicate with his heir and daughter, and Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) feeling betrayed by the reveal that her best friend Alicent (Emily Carey) was going to marry her dad!

Since we know that House of the Dragon is meant to tell the story of one of the most brutal civil wars in Targaryen history, it should come as no surprise that these once-loving characters are on a fast track to loathing. Rhaenyra might have bought some time by convincing Daemon to surrender Dreamfyre’s egg without bloodshed, but the fire and blood is coming. The only question is when.

The teaser trailer for House of the Dragon Episode 3 suggests blood might spill sooner rather than later… The teaser opens with confirmation that Viserys doesn’t just marry Alicent, but easily fathers a male heir with her. (Drama!) Something seems to attack Rhaenyra in the woods, Viserys is seen holding a spear, and we then learn that Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) and Daemon’s war against Craghas Crabfeeder (Daniel Scott-Smith) isn’t going well!

Let’s break down everything we know about House of the Dragon Episode 3 thanks to the HBO promo!

What’s In The House of the Dragon Episode 3 Teaser Trailer?

The House of the Dragon Episode 3 teaser opens with an ominous bell chime and Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) in voice over. While we see a montage of Rhaenyra and her father after a tense moment, Otto says, “The road ahead is uncertain, but the end is clear.” We cut to Otto talking to a pregnant Alicent. “Aegon will be king.”

Who’s Aegon?!? “He’s the firstborn son of the king,” Otto explains as we see Alicent and Viserys showing off a cute little Targaryen toddler. Viserys is mooning over the kid in a carriage and says to an unhappy Rhaenyra, “You will be with your own child sooner than late.”

“I do not wish to get married!” Rhaenyra yells in a different scene. An irate Viserys snaps back, “Even I do not exist above tradition and duty, Rhaenyra.” There is a tear in Rhaenyra’s eye. We cut to Alicent saying, “None of it needs be this way in truth,” and then Rhaenyra is saddling up on a horse, saying “No one’s here for me.” As she rides off, someone screams, “Princess!” And then we see Rhaenyra scurrying away from an encroaching shadow by a camp fire.

We then cut to a new shot of Craghas Crabfeeder nailing a new victim to a stake for the crabs. An unknown male speaker says in voice over, “The Crabfeeder has dug in for siege on Bloodstone while his men sabotage our fleet. The matter of the Stepstones is regrettably urgent.” There’s then a shot of Corlys Velaryon in armor looking worried and Viserys angrily thrusting a spear in a forest.

Another unknown male speaker says, “Crabs will soon dine on all of us” as an armored Daemon looks insolent. We get a frenetic montage of battle sequences with what sounds like Corlys saying, “We are losing.” An arrow catches Daemon and he falls. We then hear someone yell, “Dragon!” and Crabfeeder looks up to the sky. And said dragon lights a bunch of soldiers on fire.

That’s it. That’s the promo.

Where Should I Pause the House of the Dragon Episode 3 Teaser Trailer?

Everywhere! No, we jest. There are a few moments that seem especially juicy.

  • 0:13: “He’s the first born son of the king.” Last night’s episode of House of the Dragon ended with Viserys promising to wed Alicent “before spring’s end.” Next week’s episode clearly jumps ahead straight into summer (if not Westerosi fall) because Alicent is already married to Viserys and has given him an heir. The boy, Aegon, looks to be about two years old or so. Moreover, it seems Alicent is already preggers again. The big takeaway is we’re getting our first big time jump next week.
  • 0:28 “No one’s here for me.” After a bunch of shots setting up Rhaenyra’s alienation from her family, we see the princess storm off. She says in voice over, “No one’s here for me,” but someone seems to notice her storming off. What appears to be Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) turns and sees the princess upset. So maybe he’s there for her?
  • 0:49 “We are losing.” In the midst of a montage of battle scenes we see an arrow take a man with silver hair down. Is Daemon’s life about to get even worse?
