Is ‘Three Thousand Years of Longing’ Streaming on HBO Max or Netflix?

Would you like to see a movie in which Tilda Swinton frees a genie, and that genie happens to be played by Idris Elba with pointy little elf ears? Of course you would! You’re human, aren’t you?

Well, good news, because Three Thousand Years of Longing, which opens in theaters this week, has all of that and more. Directed by George Miller—the mad genius who brought you the Mad Max franchise—this dark fantasy is an adaptation of a 1994 short story, “The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye,” by A. S. Byatt. Tilda Swinton stars as a professor who occasionally suffers from hallucinations. Those visions start to make a lot more sense when she frees a djinn from an antique bottle, and hears all about his life story.

It’s sure to be an enthralling and entertaining watch, so here’s what you need to know about where to watch Three Thousand Years of Longing and when to expect Three Thousand Years of Longing to be available to stream.

WHERE TO WATCH THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING:

Right now, the only place to watch Three Thousand Years of Longing is in a movie theater. Three Thousand Years of Longing was released in theaters across the U.S. on Friday, August 26. (It was moved up from its original release date, August 31.) You can find a screening near you via Fandango.

After the film’s theatrical run, you will be able to purchase Three Thousand Years of Longing on digital platforms like Amazon Prime, Vudu, iTunes, and more.

WHEN WILL THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING BE ON STREAMING?

A digital release date for Three Thousand Years of Longing has not yet been announced, and it’s hard to predict when the film will become available to rent on demand.

Three Thousand Years of Longing is an MGM/United Artists release, and unlike other movie studios during the pandemic, MGM has not had a consistent digital release strategy for its films. For example, Cyrano was released on digital platforms after just a week-and-a-half in theaters. Other films like Licorice Pizza, took over four months to release on digital.

Given that, our best guess is that Three Thousand Years of Longing will stay in theaters exclusively for at least 45 days, a window many studios are now adhering to. By that timeline, you likely won’t be able to watch Three Thousand Years of Longing at home until mid-October 2022. Once the film does come to digital, you’ll be able to rent it on Amazon Prime, iTunes, YouTube, Google Play, Vudu, and more.

Keep in mind that this is all guesswork—take these estimates with a grain of salt.

WILL THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING BE ON HBO MAX?

No. Three Thousand Years of Longing is not a Warner Bros. movie, and therefore will not be streaming on HBO Max when it opens in theaters. More than that, HBO Max will no longer be streaming theatrical movies in 2022. Last year, Warner Media opted to simultaneously release its theatrical slate on streaming, meaning HBO Max subscribers could watch movies like Matrix Resurrections at home. This year, however, Warner Bros. theatrical movies will have a 45-day theaters-only run before moving to HBO Max.

IS THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING ON NETFLIX?

No. Three Thousand Years of Longing is not on Netflix and likely will not be on Netflix any time soon. If you want to see Idria Elba with little elf ears ASAP, your best option right now is to go see Three Thousand Years of Longing in a movie theater.
