The ideal episode of American Horror Story is surprisingly sweet and empathetic while making you feel so disgusted you’re on the verge of puking. That’s exactly the balance American Horror Stories hits with “Necro”, the seventh episode in Season 2.

After witnessing the murder of her mother as a child, all that Sam (Madison Iseman) wants is a normal life with a normal guy. But as she gets closer with her grave-digging coworker Charlie (Cameron Cowperthwaite), that humble desire may be too tall of an order. Wondering what details you may have missed in this twisted love story? We have you covered.

1

Cameron Cowperthwaite has appeared in 'American Horror Story' before.

Pretending to be dead to make a woman fall for him isn’t the only questionable decision Cameron Cowperthwaite has made when it comes to AHS. The actor first appeared in the Cult season of the original series where he played Speedwagon. This cult member was secretly working for the police. Speedwagon was eventually murdered by Sarah Paulson’s Ally, so it seems like Cowperthwaite can’t stay alive in this universe for long.

Spencer Neville has awful wedding luck in the world of 'AHS.'

Speaking of men who can’t can’t catch a break in the world of American Horror Story, welcome back Spencer Neville! Neville appeared in 1984 as Joseph Cavanaugh, the former fiancé of Brooke (Emma Roberts). On his wedding day, Joseph became convinced that Brooke was cheating on him with his best man and shot his friend at point blank range. That’s a pretty awful wedding. It’s right up there with Neville’s fate in “Necro” — finding out your fiancé had sex with what appears to be a corpse.

3

Madison Iseman has some serious horror roots.

Iseman may be new to the world of American Horror Story, but she’s a horror regular. Though she’s best known for her roles in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level, she also starred in I Know What You Did Last Summer the series, Annabelle Comes Home, and Goosebumps 2: Slappy’s Revenge. We may have a budding final girl in our midst.

"Necro" likely drew inspiration from another story about necrophilia, 'The Corpse of Anna Fritz.'

There’s no skirting the fact that “Necro” is supremely disturbing. The episode revolves around Sam (Madison Iseman), a woman who cheats on her boyfriend and violates a corpse in the morgue. It’s only when she’s really getting into sex with Charlie’s (Cameron Cowperthwaite) body that he grabs her, revealing that he was never actually dead.

That’s roughly the plot of the 2015 Spanish thriller, The Corpse of Anna Fritz. Co-written and directed by Hèctor Hernández Vicens, the film follows a hospital orderly and his friend who decide to rape the body of Anna Fritz, a recently deceased actor. Midway through the assault, Anna suddenly returns to life. Unlike American Horror Stories, this one doesn’t end with two unlikely lovers having sex in their grave but instead ends with revenge.

Sam's claim that Chinese wives used to be buried alive with their husbands is partially true.

At one point during their warped courtship, Sam tells Charlie that in ancient China when husbands died, their wives were buried alive alongside them. There are early records of concubines being buried alive with their masters so that they could keep them company in the afterlife. But because there was such a sharp divide between concubines and wives, Sam is a little off.
