Mack & Rita

Powered by Reelgood

This week’s new movies on VOD include fun for everyone, from the kids in your family, to the young adults who wish they were old adults, to the fans of reimagined World War II scenarios featuring Hitler’s corpse.

In Mack & Rita, Diane Keaton stars as Rita, the older alter ego of a young woman (Elizabeth Lail) who wishes she could just be old and retire already, and thanks to a magical tanning bed, she gets her wish. Rumble is an animated feel-good movie for the kids about a reptile who is also a wrestler, who takes it upon himself to fight in one big match to become a champion and keep his town’s hopes alive. And then there’s Burial, an English thriller which stars Charlotte Vega, Barry Ward, and Tom Felton (Draco!) as Russian soldiers tasked with secretly transporting Hitler’s dead body to Russia. As they slowly travel across Eastern Europe, secretly burying the body every night and digging it up for the next day’s journey, they’re pursued by Nazi loyalists who also want to steal the body so they can destroy it and deny his death (while allowing his mission to live on). A grim but action-packed riff on historical fiction, Burial is just one of the many titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Mack & Rita

Mack (Elizabeth Lail) is a 30-year-old woman who pulls a total Big on herself when she wishes she could just be the 70-year-old woman she was destined to be. (Because leaving events early to go to bed is #goals.) After visiting a “past lives specialist” (Simon Rex, whose career resurgence is everything I want it to be right now), Mack is transformed into Rita (Diane Keaton), her older alter ego. Playing it off that Rita is Mack’s aunt, Mack/Rita lives her best life as a old wine-swilling bon vivant of sorts, and she realizes that it’s fun to be the saucy old broad until it’s not, and then it’s time to figure out how to transform back into her regular self.

Rumble

The animated comedy Rumble, which came out on Paramount+ back in December, is now widely available on VOD this week, so if your kids have already seen every OTHER animated film that Ben Schwartz has starred in this year, here’s one more for ya to throw on the pile. Schwartz is merely a supporting role in this film, the main character, Rayburn Jr., an aspiring “monster wrestler” is played by Will Arnett. In the film, Rayburn Jr. is the next great wrestling hope for the small town of Stoker, where he plans to replace the beloved wrestler Tentacular (Terry Crews). The film culminates in a showdown that half wrestling match, half Step Up-style dance-off between Rayburn and Tentacular. The cast also includes Geraldine Viswanathan, Charles Barkley, Bridget Everett, and Tony Danza.
