Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle Team Up to Blast Will Smith’s “Hostage Video” Apology

Chris Rock is addressing the latest apology from Will Smith, which comes months after the actor slapped the comedian onstage at the Oscars in March. Rock, who was performing at the O2 Arena on Saturday (Sept. 3) in London, blasted Smith’s words of regret, which he offered up in a video released in July.

Rock dismissed the King Richard star, saying during his set, “fuck your hostage video,” according to Deadline. He was referring to Smith’s YouTube video in which he sits in a chair alone in a room and shares the “personal work” he’s been doing since the slap. While Smith says in the video he reached out to Rock, he also adds that the comedian was “not ready to talk.”

“Chris, I apologize to you,” Smith says. “My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”

But judging by Rock’s comments during his Saturday set, he won’t be ready for a long time. The comedian didn’t share much more about the slap, but did note, “Yes, that shit hurt. He played Ali. I can’t even play Floyd Mayweather.”

Smith played the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali in a 2001 film titled Ali. While Rock didn’t shy away from the slap, Deadline reports that he clarified he returned to work the day after the Oscars and didn’t view himself as a victim after the incident.

Rock was joined at the show by Dave Chappelle, his partner during a European stand-up tour. Chappelle — who was involved in his own high-profile onstage assault earlier this year during a set at Netflix’s comedy festival — said he is less trusting of crowds after being ambushed by an audience member in May, according to Deadline.

“That was some scary shit,” he said of his own attack. He also returned to the topic of Rock’s Oscars slap, pondering what he would have done if he were the one struck by Smith. While he didn’t know how he would have reacted in the moment, he assured the crowd Smith wouldn’t have “enjoyed the rest of his night” at the awards ceremony, per Deadline.

Shortly after storming the stage and slapping Rock, Smith accepted the Best Actor award for his role in King Richard. But his moment of glory quickly faded as the fallout from the slap intensified, and Smith has since been banned from the Oscars for 10 years.
