‘The White Lotus’ Wins Best Limited Series to Clinch Most Emmys of the Night

One of the most coveted Emmys of the night has found its home. Tonight (September 12), The White Lotus won the award for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards. We would say “Oh wow” in our best Jennifer Coolidge impression, but we kind of saw this one coming.

This final win marks the fifth win for the HBO series. In addition to Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Murray Bartlett won Outstanding Supporting Actor, Jennifer Coolidge won Outstanding Supporting Actress, and Mike White won both Outstanding Writing as well as Outstanding Directing. This win was also HBO’s 11th of the night, making the network and this show the ultimate winner of the evening. The only show and network to get close to these numbers were Apple TV+ and Ted Lasso. Both the network and show received four awards each.

“I forgot to thank HBO in my other speeches,” series creator, executive producer, writer, and director Mike White said while accepting the award.

Executive producer David Bernad was a bit less casual in his acceptance speech. “Mike and I have been talking about this show for over 15 years. It took a shared vision and unwavering trust of Casey Bloys, Francesca Orsi, and Nora Skinner at HBO to bring this to life,” Bernad said. “To our exceptional cast and crew, you showed up every day in the midst of global uncertainty, away from loved ones, and gave your heart and soul and passion to this show. We came together as a community to try and make something special. It was through this collective effort that we’re standing here today.”

The Limited or Anthology Series category has always been a competitive category. That continued to be the case this year. Hulu was poised to be the winner of this particular race. Out of the five nominated programs, three of them belonged to the streaming service: The Dropout, which focused on Theranos tech scammer Elizabeth Holmes; Dopesick, a dramatic origin story about America’s opioid addiction; and Pam & Tommy, a historical drama about actress Pamela Anderson and Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee. The other two nominees of the night came from Netflix and HBO. On the Netflix side of things, true-ish crime drama Inventing Anna was nominated. Meanwhile, HBO’s scathing satirical comedy about the rich, The White Lotus, received the Outstanding Limited Series nomination on the Warner side of things. But as strong as Hulu’s late of shows was, it was no match for Mike White’s cringeworthy yet disturbingly accurate vision.
