How ‘Kevin Can F**k Himself’ Pulled Off That Perfect Rachel Dratch Cameo

Warning: Spoilers for Kevin Can F**k Himself Season 2, Episode 5 ahead.
Kevin Can F**k Himself’s second and final season features some stellar cameos, including Fraiser’s Peri Gilpin, Kevin Can Wait’s Erinn Hayes, and more. If you’ve watched Season 2, Episode 5 of the AMC series, you know that comedian Rachel Dratch is also in the house. The creepy house packed with paintings and figurines of dolls and dogs, to be exact.
“The Unreliable Narrator” finds Allison (Annie Murphy) and Patty (Mary Hollis Inboden) braving a blackout to meet a man from City Hall who can get them access to Gertrude Fronch’s death certificate, an essential component of Allison’s escape plan. Instead of a scary man, Dratch answers the door and blesses us with one of the greatest guest roles of the series.
Ahead of Kevin Can F**k Himself’s Season 2 premiere in August, Decider spoke with creator Valerie Armstrong about Neil in single-cam, Allison faking her own death, and of course, Dratch’s surprise appearance as a disgruntled City Hall employee.

Here’s what Armstrong had to say about pulling off the perfect Massachusetts cameo — one that even got Dratch to say, “What are those goddamn pigs doing parked on my street” in her delightful accent.
“So between seasons, our director Anna Dokoza wrote or directed Rachel’s movie for Comedy Central and Paramount+, A Clüsterfünke Christmas, I believe,” Armstrong explained. “And so she got to know Rachel and Ana Gasteyer during that, and when we needed the character — her name is Beatrice Morton — we talked about who might be fun to just cast without a read, you know, who could do it. And she’s like, ‘Rachel can do it.’ We’re like, ‘Oh yeah! Rachel can do it! Oh my god!'”

In the episode, Dratch as Beatrice bellows, “35 years of my life I gave to those City Hall pricks — my best years!” She calls Allison a “mousey delinquent” and Patty “her goth friend.” And she explains, “Then I get let go by email, so yeah. I guess civic duty is a one-way street. I could have taken that place down, too. The stuff I saw…” Dratch laces her delivery with perfect levels of sass, humor, and bitterness. She absolutely owns her few minutes as Beatrice, and because this is a blackout episode, Dratch’s entire scene takes place in a candle-lit house, which adds to the creepy, unpredictable vibes.
“She has the accent. She’s like a municipal worker. And also, I don’t get to see her much like that — just like a lady, not a character, you know?” Armstrong said. “And it was really fun to see that side of her. It was wonderful.”
In the end, Beatrice doesn’t have the death certificate for Allison, but she does gives her and Patty the keys to the City Hall records room so they can break in and retrieve it themselves. So helpful, yet so unhelpful at the same time. We’re sorry our girls had to add another misdeed to their growing list, but the Rachel Dratch cameo made the risk worthwhile.
Kevin Can F**k Himself airs Mondays at 9/8c on AMC.
