HBO and Apple Dominate Emmys, While Netflix and Amazon Fall Behind

Television’s biggest night was back in all its glory on Monday evening for the 2022 Emmy Awards.

And what a night it was. From host Kenan Thompson’s awkward Leonardo DiCaprio burn to Pete Davidson being Pete Davidson, there were plenty of celebrity shenanigans to keep viewers entertained. But let’s talk about the real reason for the Primetime Emmy Awards: the hardware! It was once again a battle of the streamers, with traditional network television falling further behind every year. (Awkward, considering the awards themselves aired on NBC.)

When it comes to which networks actually went home with statues on Monday night, there was no competition. Anyone who feared HBO would lose its edge after Game of Thrones ended has been proven more than wrong—between The White Lotus, Euphoria, and Succession, the premium cable network easily dominated on Emmy wins. It’s not TV, it’s HBO!

But HBO’s longtime Emmy reign is no surprise. Perhaps the bigger story of the night was Apple TV+, which scored 52 total Emmy nominations for the night, and, thanks to Jason Sudeikis’s sports comedy series Ted Lasso, took home the biggest comedy awards of the night, including Outstanding Comedy Series.

Here’s how the night played out for the major streaming services in the telecast awards:

  • HBO/HBO Max: 12 Telecast Emmys
  • Apple TV+: 4 Telecast Emmys
  • Netflix: 3 Telecast Emmys
  • Hulu: 2 Telecast Emmys
  • Prime Video: 1 Telecast Emmy

And here’s how that line-up plays out, alongside the more traditional networks, when you add in the Creative Arts Emmys—the class of Emmy Awards that honor technical achievements such as production design, costume design, sound editing, and more, which were awarded earlier this month:

  • HBO: 38 Total Emmys
  • Netflix: 26 Total Emmys
  • Hulu: 10 Total Emmys
  • Disney+: 9 Total Emmys
  • Apple TV+: 9 Total Emmys
  • Prime Video: 7 Total Emmys
  • CBS: 5 Total Emmys
  • NBC: 5 Total Emmys
  • ABC: 3 Total Emmys
  • VH1: 2 Total Emmys

If you break it down by show, the big winner of the night was HBO’s White Lotus, followed by Euphoria (also HBO), and Netflix’s Squid Game.

  • The White Lotus (HBO): 10 Total Emmys
  • Euphoria (HBO): 6 Total Emmys
  • Squid Game (Netflix): 6 Total Emmys
  • Adele: One Night Only (CBS): 5 Total Emmys
  • Stranger Things (Netflix): 5 Total Emmys
  • The Beatles: Get Back (Disney+): 5 Total Emmys

HBO still reigns supreme at the Emmys, and it doesn’t look like that is changing any time soon. Netflix also made a decent showing, though, once again, the streamer logged fewer wins than it has in previous years. (The House of Cards days are long gone.) Hulu inched its way back into the running, thanks to Dopesick and The Dropout. Amazon, which once looked like a major Emmy player in the Fleabag years, nabbed only one telecast win for Lizzo’s reality competition show.

But it was Apple TV+ who ended up the big streaming winner, thanks to Ted Lasso, which nabbed the coveted award for Outstanding Comedy Series, beating out HBO favorites like Barry, Hacks, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. And of course, the real winner in all of this is the streamers themselves, dominating the awards over traditional networks like ABC and NBC. Welcome to the new world!
