Drew Barrymore Begs Julia Roberts to Come Back to Rom-Coms on ’Drew Barrymore Show’: “We Need You Real Bad!”

All hail the rom-com queens. During today’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Showthe actress-turned-talk show host opened up about whether we will see a revival of the classic 90s rom-com. And judging by her response, it looks like the worse off we are as a society, the more likely our itch for the genre will be scratched.

During her Drew’s News segment, Barrymore highlighted Julia Roberts’ interview with the New York Times in which she said 90s romantic comedy was taken for granted and not appreciated enough despite them being hard to make. She pointed out that after a 20-year hiatus from the genre, Roberts is starring alongside George Clooney in Ticket to Paradise — and we can only hope that this is the spark we need to ignite the rom-com renaissance.

Ross Mathews, who co-anchors the segment with the 50 First Dates actress, joked, “She’s basically saying if you didn’t appreciate Pretty Woman, big mistake.”

He continued, “I just want to say: I appreciated Pretty Woman. Do you know how many times I’ve seen Notting HillBest Friend’s Wedding? At this point, I think I am your best friend, Julia. I’ve seen it so many times.”

Claiming “nobody does rom-coms better than Julia Roberts except maybe Drew Barrymore,” Mathews went on to ask the Wedding Singer actress the burning questions we’ve all been wanting to know for the last two decades.

“Do you think that they can find that magic again that they had in the 90s rom-coms? Do those scripts exist? Are they coming across your desk? Is this possible again?” he asked.

Barrymore, who noted that she’s “so focused on the show” that she’s “not really looking at acting things right now,” pointed out the “depression era,” when romantic comedies were a hit.

“I wonder if harder times in life bring us more need for these stories,” she said. “I’m not sure exactly what it is, but it seems to me like since cinema started, we have gone in potent waves of needing these films and we love to get lost in them and I think they make us feel good.”

Mathews added, “Romantic comedies come when we need them most and Julia Roberts, thank you for coming now. Thank you so much,” before Barrymore jumped in with her own thanks, exclaiming, “We need you, Julia! We need you real bad! We need you and George Clooney!”

The Drew Barrymore Show airs on weekdays at 9:30 a.m. ET on CBS.
