How to Watch ‘The Case Against Adnan Syed’ Now That The ‘Serial’ Subject Has Been Released From Jail

After 23 years, Adnan Syed is a free man. His case, which rose to fame in the 2014 investigative journalism podcast Serial and later in the 2019 docuseries The Case Against Adnan Syed, was officially overturned by a Baltimore judge yesterday (September 19), freeing him from more than two decades in prison.

The first season of the podcast, which is hosted by Sarah Koenig, focused on Sayed’s case and his conviction for the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, an 18-year-old high school student. Initially resulting in a mistrial, the second attempt sentenced him to life in prison plus 30 years, despite maintaining his innocence.

Following the release of the 41-year-old man, who was only 17 years old when he was put behind bars, Serial released a new episode, detailing why his case was vacated. In the episode, Koenig points out that upon a new prosecutor’s review of the case, it was discovered that information surrounding other potential suspects was never shared with Syed’s lawyers as well as inconsistencies in cell phone records and eyewitness testimonies, per Deadline.

But in order to understand the importance of now, it’s only right that we go back to the beginning. While it’s been eight years since Season 1 of Serial first made waves, HBO made a 2019 docuseries highlighting the case, arguing that much of Syed’s conviction was rooted in racial bias — but also revealed that there was no trace of his DNA at the murder scene. To bring yourself up to date with, as Koenig puts it, this “messy” case, here’s some information about where you can stream the series.

How to watch The Case Against Adnan Syed:

The four-part true crime docuseries, which is brought by Oscar-nominated director Amy Berg, is currently available to stream on HBO Max. While you won’t see much of what’s happened between 2018 and now, it will still provide you with a decent understanding of the background behind this case.

If you’re not an HBO Max subscriber, no problem. You can also rent or buy The Case Against Adnan Syed on services like Prime Video, Vudu, and more.
