HBO Docuseries ‘The Case Against Adnan Syed’ Will Premiere Follow-Up Episode Following the Subject’s Release From Prison

Three years and one overturned conviction later and The Case Against Adnan Syed is officially getting one more episode, so if you’re curious as to what’s happened with the case in the last few years, you’re in luck.

Adnan Syed’s story was first made popular in 2014 by the investigative journalism podcast, Serial, where host Sarah Koenig outlined the case, which followed the 1999 disappearance and murder of 18-year-old high school student Hae Min Lee. Her ex-boyfriend, then-17-year-old Syed, was convicted of the act and handed a life sentence plus 30 years, despite maintaining his innocence through it all.

HBO’s four-part docuseries, The Case Against Adnan Syed, was released five years later in 2019 and brought forth startling revelations, such as a lack of Syed’s DNA at the crime scene. It was ultimately referenced as evidence in his most recent hearing, which resulted in his release from prison after 23 years.

Academy Award-nominated director Amy Berg has been filming the follow-up episode since early 2021. She was even present in the courthouse earlier this week when the judge approved the motion to vacate his murder conviction.

“We knew the end of The Case Against Adnan Syed was not the end of this story, and we’ve been closely following every twist and turn in the case since the series premiered in March 2019,” Berg said in a press release provided to Decider. “It’s gratifying to see many of the questions and issues probed in the original episodes come to bear on the events of this week.”

The new episode of The Case Against Adnan Syed, which is currently in production, will feature “exclusive access to Syed leading up to and following his release from prison” and is set to debut on HBO and HBO Max in 2023. In the meantime, the first four parts are currently available to stream on the platform.
