Velma Is a Lesbian in New ‘Scooby-Doo’ Movie And Fans Are Losing Their Minds

Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! confirms something that many of us already knew was true: Velma Dinkley is a lesbian. Our favorite sweater girl’s sexuality has been a hot topic for years, and thankfully, the new Scooby-Doo film delivers some juicy answers to its nosey fans.

The movie, which premiered on VOD services like Prime Video on October 4, 2022 (and will be landing on HBO Max on October 14), follows the Scooby crew as they team up with reformed villain Coco Diablo to save Halloween. And, while a majority of the gang is exasperated at the thought of welcoming a new, untrustworthy member to their group, Velma appears enthusiastic and welcoming because it’s obvious that she has a big, fat crush on Coco.

Fans quickly picked up on this and hit social media to gush about their favorite scenes. One clip shows Daphne suggesting that they visit Coco and Velma responding, “I love that idea!” before quickly backtracking (in the truest “gay disaster” fashion). The fan wrote, “The casualness of Velma accidentally being super gay and the rest of the gang just giving her that look.”

A second clip shows the brainy detective becoming googly-eyed after Coco calls her “the cute one,” and another shows Velma’s observations upon meeting Coco, which read “obviously brilliant”, “incredible glasses”, “amazing turtleneck”, “loves animals” – all fairly basic traits – but nonetheless, ones that leave Velma with foggy glasses, breathily saying “jinkies.”

At this point, there’s no use in denying what fans and creators have been saying all along. In 2020, Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated producer Tony Cervone revealed that he wanted to make Velma canonically lesbian in his 2010 animated film, which featured Velma’s enemies-to-lovers friendship with an original character Marcie Fleach.

“Marcie and Velma – Mystery Incorporated. I obviously don’t represent every version of Velma Dinkley, but I am one of the key people that represents this one,” wrote Cervone in an Instagram post. “We made our intentions as clear as we could ten years ago. Most of our fans got it. To those that didn’t, I suggest you look closer. There’s no new news here.”

And, James Gunn, who wrote the 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo film, tweeted that he tried to depict Velma as “explicitly gay” in his film but was met with resistance from studio executives. The filmmaker tweeted this in response to a fan who wrote, “Please make our live-action lesbian Velma dreams come true.”

Gunn wrote in a since-deleted tweet: “In 2001, Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”

Well, welcome to the canon Velma and Coco. Hopefully you prove to be more successful than fans’ thwarted efforts to make Velma and Daphne a thing (which resulted in a measly 145 fanfics on AO3).
