Maggie and Negan Take Manhattan in ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ First Look

New York Comic Con might have been celebrating/lamenting the end of The Walking Dead with this year’s final panel for the series, but that doesn’t mean the franchise can’t also look ahead. And that’s just what they did, as cast members Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan revealed the first look at their spinoff series, The Walking Dead: Dead City.

The spinoff, which will premiere in April 2023 on AMC and AMC+, follows up on the end of TWD as Maggie (Cohan) and Negan (Morgan) — formerly bitter enemies — have to head to New York City for a specific, so far secret, mission. What they discover there is that pretty much as soon as the zombie apocalypse hit, Manhattan blew up all the bridges and tunnels, finally keeping all the horrible people from New Jersey out of the city. Just kidding, but what it actually did was sever the island from the outside world. What lies inside of the city, and why Maggie and Negan need to get inside, are just two of the mysteries the six episode long series will explore.

The show is showrun by Eli Jorné, and includes cast-members Gaius Charles as Perlie Armstrong, Karina Ortiz as Amaia, Zeljko Ivanek as “The Croat,” Mahina Napoleon as Ginny and Jonathan Higginbotham as Tommaso.

Enough explanation, right? Let’s get to the first look! Along with Maggie and Negan, we get to meet a few new characters: Charlie Solis as “Bartender,” and Trey Santiago-Hudson as “Jano.” How they’ll play into the action is, of course, TBD.

Along with Dead City, there are two more spinoff in various stages of development: one sending fan-favorite Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) to Paris in a series that seems to be simply titled Daryl Dixon (my money is on the Walking Dead branding rearing its head at some point); and a TBA titled series focusing on the reunion of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) that promises to be an epic romance in a part of the world we’ve never seen before the in the franchise. That’s in addition to Fear the Walking Dead, which is currently in production on its eighth season; and Tales of the Walking Dead, which finished its first season a few weeks back and has yet to be renewed or canceled.

In addition to the first look photos at Dead City, the panel also revealed the opening minutes of this week’s new episode of The Walking Dead — at least new, if you don’t have AMC+, which streams episodes a week earlier than broadcast. In the look, we see a montage of scenes walking us through Daryl’s history, before picking up on last week’s cliffhanger: villain Lance (Josh Hamilton) at knife-point, and Daryl surrounded. You can watch the new look below:

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC, and streams a week early on AMC+. The Walking Dead: Dead City will premiere in April, 2023.
