George R.R. Martin Reveals How Long He Thinks ‘House of the Dragon’ Could Run: “Going to Take 4 Full Seasons”

House of the Dragon fans got some promising news from author George R.R. Martin today. The prolific novelist, who is behind both Game of Thrones and the hit prequel series currently airing on HBO, shared in a blog post today that House of the Dragon could go far beyond the current two-season run it’s been given by the network.

Martin shared his plans for the future of House of the Dragon in a note published on his website, revealing that he envisions at least four seasons of his show based on his fantasy novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire.

“If House of the Dragon had 13 episodes per season, maybe we could have shown all the things we had to ‘time jump’ over… though that would have risked having some viewers complain that the show was too ‘slow,’ that ‘nothing happened,'” he wrote.

House of the Dragon is in the thick of its first season, which consists of 10 episodes. HBO renewed the show for Season 2 just five days after the series premiere.

In his post, Martin compared House of the Dragon‘s airtime to other hit fantasy series, writing, “As it is, I am thrilled that we still have 10 hours every season to tell our tale. (Rings of Power has only 8, as you may have noticed, and my AMC show Dark Winds is doing 6 episode seasons). I hope that will continue to be true. It is going to take four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to the Dance of the Dragons, from start to finish.”

Martin’s post comes after sources speculated about the length of House of the Dragon in a story published by The Hollywood Reporter this summer, before the series even premiered on HBO. At the time, THR reported, “Sources say the show’s civil war arc might be shorter than you might expect. While nothing is carved in stone, the current Targaryen storyline is currently plotted to run only about three or four seasons.”

Regardless of how long House of the Dragon lasts, there won’t be a shortage of Game of Thrones content on HBO any time soon. The streamer has multiple Martin-inspired shows in development, including an untitled Jon Snow series, plus The Sea Snake, A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms, Ten Thousand Ships, The Golden Empire and two other animated projects.

House of the Dragon airs Sundays at 9/8c on HBO and is available to stream on HBO Max.
