“What Are Filipinos?’: ‘Celebrity Jeopardy’ Got A Bit Cringe Last Night

Celebrity Jeopardy! was anything but boring as Ike Barinholtz, Simu Liu, and Iliza Shlesinger battled it out on Sunday night’s (Oct. 16) semifinals. However, the most memorable moment was one awkward exchange between the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star and Barinholtz.

The question, which read “October is the history month for this Asian-American ethnic group that includes Olivia Rodrigo and Jo Koy,” was immediately answered by the Suicide Squad actor, who said, “What are Filipinos?”

While host Mayim Bialik said the answer was correct and Barinholtz continued onto his next category, Liu jumped in with, “What do you mean, ‘What are Filipinos’? What do you mean by that, Ike?” regarding the way the response was phrased with “what” instead of “who.”

“Oh my god, that’s not what I meant,” Barinholtz awkwardly responded as he threw his head down on his podium. “You have to answer in the form of a question.”

Liu then turned to Shlesinger and quipped, “Okay. Did you hear him? I heard him.”

Meanwhile, fans were all for Liu’s response to Barinholtz. Some found it comedic while others praised the actor for correcting him.

“I appreciate @SimuLiu defensively asking “What do you mean ‘What are Filipinos?'” one wrote.

Another said, “Simu saw his moment and jumped right in there,” while a third person posted, “Thank you for speaking out and correcting him. ⁣I appreciate you, Simu.”

“What do you mean ‘what is a Filipino?’ #celebrityJeopardy @Jeopardy way more funny than SNL,” someone else wrote.

Unlike the previous round where Liu was able to pull through in a surprising turn of events, he was not as lucky in last night’s game. While Barinholtz took the win, Liu was still able to raise an additional $50,000 in donations for the charity Stop AAPI Hate.

Celebrity Jeopardy! airs on Sunday nights at 8/7c on ABC.
